MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Koni rear shock absorbers
In 1976, In installed Koni adjustable rear shocks on the 1971 midget. Set for the softest ride, over time it was necessary to adjust towards firm to keep the same ride characteristic. In the 1980s, the shocks started leaking and I was able to locate Koni replacements. 180K miles later, the replacement shocks are not leaking but have long since been adjusted to the firmest settings and have gone soft.
As there are no Koni NOS shocks to be found and apparently KONI no longer have a rebuild program, I am thinking that SPAX adjustable shocks may be a suitable replacement and may even fit on the Koni mounts. Has anyone has experience with SPAX performance and durability? The Konis greatly improved handling and lasted a long time but now proper replacement is due. |

I guess the problem is that you are in the USA. In the UK I found Koni to be extremely helpful in finding something to replace the Koni's at the front with a Frontline kit. It might be worth contacting Koni UK and seeing if they will ship direct to you? |

I purchased my car, a MkIII Midget, in the late 1990s and it already had Spax shockers on the back end. They are still leak free and performing well. Whilst I have rarely driven the car very hard I do enjoy "pushing on" and I have never had cause for concern. The only time I drove a standard Midget was 50+ years ago so I cannot make any sensible comparison. I do remember driving in convoy with an MGB V8 and the driver commented that my Midget seemed to "handle well" which I think meant he couldn't lose me on the twisty bits! |
