MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Late 1275 twin silencer system

Has anybody tried removing one of the silencers to aid gas flow / reduce the back pressure / give a slightly sportier tone?

My system seems quite restrictive, and pressure out the back is enough to knock the cat over if he happens to walk by (well, almost...)

On my '69 1275 it just had a single box in line with the car. What was the reasoning behind the twin box system?

Oh, and I'd rather not just replace with a new single box like RC40 or similar, as the rear section was put on by PO just before sale, so is only about 6 months old, seems a shame to bin it. Could I just remove the small one by the N/S/R wheel?

Bite the bullet M Weller and fit an RC40 with a Maniflow LCB - you won't be disappointed but make sure the cat gives it a wide berth!
Keep/ebay the old system?

I have the Stainless Steel single box system from Moss, which gives a great noise, and yes it is coupled with a LCB style manifold.
I expect there are plenty of alternative systems and parts available, so you should be able to make up what you are after OP.
Maniflow are the boys to consider initially in my opinion, well made products with known results.
You can always offset the cost by selling your existing pea shooter !!

Hmmm, maybe not best to mess with current system, just wait till it actually needs replacing and go with an RC40. I already have a LCB manifold, not Maniflow, looks like a MGOC one, maybe Peco... Anyway, it's still good, so will leave that well alone.

Mike,
yeap stick with it for now. You may need the money for other stuff on the car, generally keep what you've got on the car as you may get used to it or even like it. After a full year round of using the car you'll know better what works and what you want to change.

My midget came with a single box system with LCB of unknown make and when the LCB was removed it showed it wasn't well made and would have been restrictive because of one of it's welds being slightly offset, I swapped to a Maniflow LCB and what a difference top end improved breathing was noticeable.

When/if the time comes to replace I'd recommend you contact Kim Dear of Magic Midget - http://www.magicmidget.co.uk/

I would caution that having a sporty tone, if too loud, can have its downside if you like driving country roads and through villages as the noise can be embarrassing and frighten horses. If I have to replace my back box I'll make sure it's a quieter.

I have a Maniflow large single box across the back, aids clearances to springs / road bumps etc, not noisy but good sound.

I had similar thoughts and cut off the back box many years ago - sounded horrible and way too loud. Had to get a new exhaust so don't do it is my advice!
John Collinson

What Nigel ^^^ said.
Mine's from Kim at Magic Midget too. Got a shock when first started after fitting as it sounded like a small B (MG), low and bassy, not too loud but rich and rounded. Plus better exhaust flow. Win/win.
J Tickle

The first box is not actually a silencer, but a resonator box. The silencer is the one across the back, so if you remove it leaving just the resonator, you will get a loud tinny rasp.
Best way is to get a proper single box system, but as Nigel says, if it's working OK, keep it and spend your money on other improvements until you really need to change the exhaust.
Bernie Higginson

Thanks everybody for your thoughts, I'll file this one in the 'bad idea' pile...
M Weller

Another vote for the RC40. Now I've mended all the holes and cracks in the system it's given me back a lovely noise.

I removed a silencer and kept a resonator on the P6. It sounds awesome.
