MG Midget and Sprite Technical - LED dash bulbs and holders
Anyone out there upgraded to LED's and have any view on if it was worth the cost ? I can see a few bulbs and holders but wonder if there was a kit available that i havent found yet |

Yes I have. The correct bulbs are not available over the counter and pretty unreliable. I bought a load of warm white LEDs with stiff flying leads and soldered them to the holders. No need to worry about replacing them as they last forever. Packed the holders with odd bits of foam rubber to stabilise the leads. For the small gauges I bent the leads 90º to direct the light into the window, but for the tacho and speedo they work fine just directed straight in. The cost is hardly anything if you are handy with soldering. Here's a pic of the dual gauge light.
I also have LEDs for the front sidelights and number plate light. Thus I have amber flashers at the front and white sidelights, in the same housing. |

Why do you need holders as the led bulbs are available that fit the existing holders.
Different makes and suppliers can vary in quality. Personally I like the look of LED bulbs that look similar to the old style bulbs - see E10/MES (Part no.2) in link below for dash bulbs. LED bulbs will be a lot brighter than the standard bulbs but will show up if you have faults in the circuit and you won't get their full benefit if your instruments haven't been refurbished as (for later cars' main dials at least) the blue and white painted reflector surface inside the dial housings with probably be dirty, faded or rusted. http://www.dynamoregulatorconversions.com/dash-board-panel-lamp-bulbs-shop.php |
