MG Midget and Sprite Technical - little help please

Hi there i have just recently brought my first mg midget and love her she needed some tlc but looking good so far . . . I am just learning now and was wondering i resprayed my wheels and when fitting them i noticed there was play vertical and think it was movment in the king pin i noticed there was a grease nipple will that need filling with a grease gun and would it be the reason for movement or will it need replacing ? Also i have drove the car for a few miles fine but today heard a squeel when the clutch peddle was pressed . . . could this be because she was stood for a while or will it be the release bearing ? Thanks for reading and hope it was'nt to long . . .

yes grease nipples need greasing - 3 per side and do them every 2000 miles or 6 months which ever comes first. The squealing will be the thrust / release bearing 'they all do that sir' well sometimes it goes away and other times it gets worse until something fails.

You need to get the play checked, it could also be bearings. NEEDS DOING!!!

Verical play might be adjusted out by removing a shim or two under the top trunion to compensate for wear in the large scintered washer... but as above (or below...) grease the susp regularly and check for play in the bearing.

Agree with DS... the clutch noise sometimes just goes away... and anything to do with the clutch internals is an engine out job, so most prefer the 'wait-and-see' approach.

another thought on the clutch - the Midget thrust bearing is a simple hard carbon pad, a bit prone to wear and breaking up if abused. Do not ride the clutch in traffic or at lights; make full use of handbrake and neutral.

Thank you for the replys it is a great help i think i'll leave the clutch bearing for now as it was fine when started today (typical) . I greased the nipples and it felt alot better thanks i will just keep my eye on it for now and grease regular. Thanks again
