MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Long range fuel tank

I know this subject has cropped up in the past; I've checked the archives and read at length.

Now my car is back up and running it has caught my attention again that I'd like more range from a fuel fill up.

I know that theres lots of petrol stations and I know I could carry a spare can in the boot or, gods forbid, drive slower...

But I'd like not to have to fill up so often.

Has anybody in the last couple of years come up with a LR tank design and followed it up to manufacture?
I'm looking for something similar to Arie's F/Line one thats nla, or Neil's Amazon box space model.
Something that gives say 9 imp gallons, doesn't intrude into the boot and as 'nice-to-have' but not deal breakers, has a return line and an internal swirl pot.

If sombody came up with a design, fag-packet or not, and actually got it made could you point me in the direction of the place that made it, so I can get a quote for a repeat?

I don't really count unsustainable forigners made on the night shift at BAE, or hand crafted one-offs made by clever people in their sheds as a labour of love. I'd like to make up for my lack of skill with a welding torch by buying the thing!

Mark

Not got a current answer, but the BMC Compettions Department did produce a long range rally tank for a works Frogeye Sprite. Pictures from underneath in 'Works Rally Mechanic' book. That tank was made by cutting the bottom out and welding the bottom half or third of another tank on below.

12 gallons apparently, see:

Ots of various tanks on ebay...also look into fuel cells

To get what you want is probably not going to be plug and play, its going to take some modification of some type to force fit

Probably the easiest would be to measure and find the dimionsions that best fit what your willing to modify to then find a tank based on that criteria

Hi Mark,
I have parts on order for my 'reserve tank project'
This uses a marine outboard engine fuel tank of 11.3 litres capacity.
It has a pick-up pipe as standard and uses marine fuel pipe quick connectors.
Ive ordered a 3 way valve off Ebay.

The marine tank will fit into a holding bracket in the boot and i can switch over to it using the 3 way valve which will be positioned on the rear bulkhead ( i am also replacing the cardboard rear bulkhead with aluminium for safety).

On the 5% of journeys i do where i need the extra capacity i can fill up the tank, put it in the bracket and snap together the fuel line.

If not in use, then i'll just leave it there empty as its plastic and hardly weighs anything, then its like having an empty can in the boot.

Andy Phillips (frankenfrog)

Snap-on fuel connector.. there is a mating part that fits on the tank.

Also thought about adding an extra fuel pump so you could pump the fuel out of the plastic tank and into the main one so you could drive along and watch the fuel level gauge go up instead of down ;-).

Then it also means you would have a spare pump available if the other one fails.....

maybe i have too much time on my hands........

Andy Phillips (frankenfrog)

Thanks for the tips everybody.

I can see that the auxilliary/extra tank in the boot is an option, and Andy your idea reminds me of round-the-world aircraft flights from the twenties!
I'm looking for somthing that fits under the boot though. More like your suggestion Mike.

I've just 'won' a rough standard tank off ebay. I'll use it as the start of a pattern to draw somthing up. Then I'll punt my sketches round a few places and see what turns up.

Mark, I think I should change my ident to:

All the best everybody.

We are commissioning alloy EFI fuel tanks which are foam filled. At the moment they are 7- 8 gallon capacity, but we could do unto 9 - 10 gallon if needed.

Hi Jonathan; sounds great. Would it fit in the standard location and use the existing filler? Eight gallons would suffice. When? How much?

Best Regards

M Crossley

Yes , and using all or just 4 of the original mounting bolts to locate its position then Stainless straps to hold it in place. * gallons should not be an issue.
I'm waiting for my first tank which will be on view at MG Live in June.
Prices are not yet available until they have built the first one. A slightly larger tank will attract a slightly higher price.

Mark wrote as a condition for his tank...

Back in the mid 60s ,Ford Australia had a GT Cortina called a GT500 which had an extra tank in the boot mounted just behind the rear firewall between the wheelarches feeding down into the original tank. It was filled by two LeMans style filler caps
I actually owned one for a year or two and you could drive the thing flat out all day without thinking about fuel
They used the original fuel gauge setup and would simply read full until the top tank emptied and then as you got into the bottom (original) tank the gauge would operate as normal

I'm sure I've read something, in the dim and distant past, about modifying an MGB tank to fit a midget. Can't remember if it was the early strap on tank or the later bolt on tank.

Rob
Rob aka MG Moneypit

I think they did that for the midget Atlantic. It also had a ford 1600 engine

Thought you would be impressed, why do it the short way
You have to understand that we are upside down here and life is difficult
Rob
I had a 2.0 litre Escort Mk2 tank in a V8 B once ,It was a tiddle larger than a B tank and fitted up quite well; It was a bit deeper, about the same width and a bit longer/went close to the diff housing but ok
Best thing was the filler neck was in the wrong place so it needed a tube accross inside the boot to connect up.
I thought that was a pain at the time but it was the best thing ever as it stopped the dreaded fuel splash out the cap under hard acceleration
Don't know how it would fit up to a Midget, but worth a look
It was the under boot floor Escort tank, some year models were in the boot- In Aust. anyway
