MG Midget and Sprite Technical - low ratio steering rack...
Are there any low ratio steering racks/upgrades around? The sort that give you full lock on one 360 degree rotation? |

try summitracing.com they got some variuos racks I think some of which are universial...it will take some modding, but doable prop |

The standard rack changed in early '72 from 2.25 turns to 2.8 turns lock to lock. The early one is noticably quicker. |

Rob, you'd have really heavy steering with a one turn lock to lock rack and I suspect that the steering would be almost too direct even for a race car. You could have a new set of front steering arms made up that are shorter and see if that helped. It would definitely reduce the effective ratio of the rack. You might get into bump steer issues, but that would be something that you'd have to consider in the design. |

A long time ago (mid '70's) I had a very small diameter steering wheel on my autocross car (62 Sprite). It made it so fast I went to a larger wheel. don't remember the measurement. |

The late racks are from the Triumph Spitfire, where they were 3.5 turns lock to lock (owing to the Spitfire's greater lock and tighter turning circle). A high ratio rack at 2.5 of turns lock to lock (on the Spitfire) is available from Moss Europe. I have one of these on my race Ginetta G15. One word of warning - don't use the Moss solid rack mounts since they are made of 'Monkey Metal'! |

Rob, If you went the shorter arm route you would change the Ackmann angle. http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1g/bl489g.htm James |
