MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Lubricants
I just wanted to poll the forum as to what oil is used in the 1275 engine. In my MINIs I use 20/50 Castrol Grand Prix motorcycle oil as it contains zddp still. VR1 is not available to me. Is 20/50 the correct choice for the midget? Also, should I use the same oil in the gearbox? How about the rear end...regular 90 weight gear oil? Thanks |

that 20/50 will be fine for the engine and box. The rear end needs Extreme Pressure gear oil, Castrol EP90 for example, or a multigrade EP oil like EP75/90. |

Thanks.... Also, forgot to ask. Does it take the same oil filter as a Transverse A series ( later type spin on )? |

Depends, later do. |

Well....I tried a cheap FRAM filter I keep as a MINI spare. Fits. ( FRAM would be my last choice for a filter, it will be changed as soon as I order new ones in Spring ) I always use the WIX premium filters. |

with my previous classic MGs I used to use Mobil 1 and they were daily use cars that I done tens of thousands of miles in to fully run in my present Midget engine I've used 20w/50 but recent discussions on here and recent cold weather has reminded me 20w/50 wasn't the only weight of oil used in the Spridgets over the years so I'm going back to Mobil 1 and 0w/40 - that frightens some as it did for tens of thousands of miles with the previous cars http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68959-mobil-1-0w-40-new-life-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx for rear axle (and my Type 9 gearbox) - fully synthetic |
