MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Lucas sealed unit headlight - no dipped beam

Hi,

I'm on a touring holiday of Wales at the moment, which is the furthest the midget has been, and I've had to cut down somewhat on the spares and tools to make room for shoes and hats...

Anyway, I've just noticed that the dipped beam (not the high beam) isn't working on one of them - is it likely that this would be due to a faulty sealed unit, or has a wire come off, or something else perhaps?

I tried to take it off like I would have done the bulbed one (that I thought it was), and there appears to be a spring holding the unit in place. I think I'm just not understanding how it works now.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Probably a sealed beam unit fault but just pull the connection off and check that it is not an electrical fault.

To get the headlamp out you pull it forward and unhook the spring, then you can release the two halves of the mounting ring and change the unit. They are cheap enough and available from motor stores outlets.
The ones for the Midget do not have the sidelamp fitment on them as some do, however if that is the only one available then simply use it without the sidelamp.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

I had this on main beam so I replaced existing units with new with new (H4) units - and guess what after a short time main beam was off again, turned out to be just a bullet connector that was either a bit loose or furred up

One side of the lamps is twinned to the other by a common connect (i.e. a double connector capable of taking four wired connectors has one going in and two coming out)

you have to take the front grille off to get at the connectors, a bit of a pain to get at the two nuts nearest the wings on the grille so check and clean all other (horns, sidelamps/indictators) whilst you're at it

use your Midget often and you can cut down on the spares you carry because you'll have already replaced faulty/worn items

Thanks guys, I'll check it out.

Turns out there is a classic car spares place in the town I'm staying in (Llangollen), so I'll pop along there shortly.

Cheers,

It's just clicked with me (slow I know) you're touring Wales you lucky b

We were that way this time last year and will be back there later this year

Soooo many good roads, if you've not already done so I'd recommend the B4391 Bala to Llangynog if after 6 pm stopping at the Tanat Valley Hotel (opposite side of the road to the pub you see) public car park just along road

and the unclassified road just off the B4391 out of Bala

and so many others

the B4518 Llanbrynmair to Llanidloes, calling at at the superb Crown & Anchor on Long Bridge St.

and so many unclassified roads ideal for a Midget

You lucky b - enjoy
