MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Mallory Dual point & coils

Has anyone had any problems with these distributor? It was working well till about 2 weeks ago and started to miss once and while, now barely runs. Should I have changed coil with the Mallory, and could I have fried coil? Barely firing one set of the points let alone two. With timing light hooked up you can see miss fire. Pulled point and surface looks good. Meter shows points are breaking when turning but no consistant spark. Local sports car shop told me it wouldn't be coil, but I'd like someone else's comments. Show nexted week and now a problem, That's way it goes.
thanks Jim

which mallory do you have james, I have one but havent installed it yet....but looking forward to it....I wonder if its the condenser,,,,after all they dont look all that differant then the typical lucas condensors...they are built really nice and solid...could be the dist. has shifted in the dist. carrierer housing that fits into the dist. hole....could be a craked cap also....have you tried running it in a dark garage and looking for a nice brite blue electrical dance show....

I'm running a Mallory, and am pleased with it. It certainly seems to be a more sophisticated unit than the old Lucas that it replaced, but that Lucas was pretty tired.

I used it with the dual points for a while, but eventually switched to a pertronix Ignitor. It's working very well indeed, and hasn't skipped a beat in years.

hey gryf,

Glad you made it back, any good photos of the trip, to bad your summer break is almost over,,,,back to school young man...lol

seriously,

apperantly on mine I cant do a conversion to the pretonix, but not sure why....it does have the vacume advance....do you have any ideas as to why....is yours a vac or mechanical advance....did you get re-curve kit also.....on your mallory for the 1500 do you have to use the "sleave" that goes into the dist. hole.....I still havent figured out how that actually holds the dist in with out flying out.

Have you looked at the Aldon Ignitor, set it up once & forget about it. Had one for many years & never had a problem with it.
