MG Midget and Sprite Technical - mallory unililte ignition

Anyone install a Mallory Unilite Ignition?
If so, I think that you had to drill the shaft to install the lucas drive gear. Do you have any pictures of exactly what needs to be done.

thanks,

Rebecca: I have the Mallory Unilite ignition in my A. The procedure should be about the same for both. (I've got the 123 in my midget). But I don't have pics. The following instructions assume you already have a distributor in place and that you're going to replace it with the Mallory unit.

1)Pull the distributor cap
2) Put the engine on TDC (If I recall correctly, the rotor button will be pointing to about the 2:00 o'clock position).
3) Carefully, as accurately as possible, put a mark on the distributor housing that's in line with the tip of the rotor putton.
4) Carefully pull the distributor, noting that the rotor button will rotate slightly clockwise as you pull it out.
5) Take the old unit and the Mallory to a machine shop and tell them to install the drive gear on the Mallory shaft maintaining the same relationship between the drive dog and the rotor button as exists with the old unit. They'll know what to do.

There's nothing crucial about being 100% accurate with this. Just a relatively reasonable duplicate relationship. UNLESS there's the possibility that being off slightly now puts your vacuum unit in interference with some other part, etc.

This is from memory. So let's wait and see if any others see this differently.
