MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Manifold and Carburettor Questions

Since my new loom isn't due yet, and I haven't started the new financial year with any work, today will be manifolds and carburettors.

Question 1:- the manifolds gasket has foil on one side: which way does it go?

Question 2:- What's the jet level you'd set for a first rough shot at correct mixture?

Question 3:- Any other tips?

Please and thank you.

Nick..bring the jets up level to the top of the bridge and use a decent depth guage to then drop them back down 60 thou. It'll get it started. Dave

Hi Nick

Another way to set the jets for starting is bring the jets level with the bridge and then turn the adjusting nut anticlockwise 12 flats.
Bob Beaumont

Thank you. That'll do nicely. I will check your methods against each other.

Nick and Cherry Scoop

12 flats seemed to be about 70 thou.
Got the answer to Q1 from the archive.

"Got the answer to Q1 from the archive."

What was it? ;o)
Dave O'Neill 2

In 2004 Les Bengtson said metal to head, and then Chris Octarine said metal to manifold. His reasons were better, I thought.

I don't know how to make a link, but it was in Tech, and called 'Exhaust Manifold - fits which way?'
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Nick...60 thou was a guide of course..mixture much depends on the state of the jets and the type of needles you have in place etc [aka witchcraft].. Dave
David Cox

Very interesting question, because i do not understand why the foil side is the manifold side.

Flip Brühl

Yes, Bob is correct about 12 flats - that's what I've done for the past ???? years. This what the handbook teaches us:

"......Screw the jet adjusting nuts (2) until each jet is flush with the bridge of its carburetter, or as near to this as possible (both jets being in the same relative position to the bridge of their respective carburetters). Replace the pistons and suction chamber assemblies, and check that the pistons fall freely onto the bridge of the carburetters (by means of the piston lifting pins (3)). Turn down each jet adjusting nut two complete turns (12 flats)."

If you don't have one you can access a copy of the 1967 handbook at <http://www.1978mgmidget.com/1967_Midget_Owners_Manual.pdf>

Hope this helps a bit.
Peter Blockley

Thank you Peter. Done all that now, though not in that order.
