MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Marina crank wanted
Stripped me old engine down last week, block and crank are scrap. Lobes are worn down on the cam and resulting metal has got everywhere. The rockers will need rebushing but are salvageable. Head is ok. Had some rust in bore 3 for some reason, will have to get the head pressure tested. Head gasket looks fine so no water contamination there. I am going to use my spare Maestro block to build a 1380. However the Maestro crank can't be used without machining of the flywheel end. So I could do with finding a Marina (or maybe Ital) crank like my old one which will fit my flywheel and A+ rods. A pic of my old crank shows the end. I'm sure it's not a midget one as it only has 1 dowel. My block was Marina (Spin on filter, dynamo mounting holes, no ribs). Also another question, I read in an old thread that marina rods were A type, whereas the later A+ rods were better. However my old rods and the Maestro rods have the same part numbers (12G4114), but with different numbers after that part number. They're also slightly different at the little end. Any thoughts? Btw, the Maestro block weighs 31.9 kg, the Marina block 30.9kg. Both totally bare, oh the marina block has cam bearings in. Matt |

I have a brand new Marina crank. midgetbitz (at) gmail (dot) com |

I've just been reading the thread about flywheel modification, and looking at David Smith's pics of his Marina engine. That crank has a square 78mm end. Mine has a tapered 78mm end (pic attached). So where did my crank come from and what did it fit? I have an rear oil seal kit from Peter May which IIRC is the Marina/A+ version, and fits fine. |

Tarqs, I noticed that and was wondering too; just don't know enough about the detail do we! Do *all* Midget cranks have 2 dowels? or did some Marina / Itals have the taper ? Dave O do you know for sure, you've probably seen more cranks than most of us... |

I have a MARINA 12G1303 crank with the same offset single dowel but it has NO TAPER on the flange. Just been into the garage to double check. Same part number but different flange shape. came off an early Marina with low mileage. |

Whats the diameter of the square bit? |

You have what looks to be A+ rods. My marina engine also had A+ rods. I think it's the usual thing at the factory - A rods ran out before Marina blocks so they used A+. Thanks for very kindly weighing both bare blocks. I'm always looking for totally scrap parts (free of charge) and hope to be the at NEC for the classic show but will be travelling there and back on the train (but can bring a bag) Daniel - I see a crank whenever I look into a mirror! |

Sure it is a crank and not a dipstick? :o) Oooooh. Walked straight into that one! PS D1312. How is your brother getting on. Still at Goldair? PPS Tarquin. 3.132 inches. 79.5 mm approx |

Right, it's clear that I have a Marina crank which has been turned down at the end to fit a Midget flywheel. So I either need another one of these (unlikely) or I get my flywheel spigot hole enlarged to fit a new standard Marina crank. Thanks Rob (& Richard Perry over the phone). Daniel, you can have the old Maestro crank if it's of any use. Also my old block if thats definitely scrap also. I've found a couple of used cranks so should be sorted soon. |

I'd like your scrap Maestro crank and any scrap block. I don't think I have any 1275 Midget flywheels left. Are you going to the NEC classic? |
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve |
Daniel I have a 1380 block with ventilation holes in it, if you're interested? |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
Dave, I'd be happy to find a new home for it, especially if you have the story behind the holes and even more especially if you know the engine number. |
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve |
Daniel, you are welcome to it. It has been sitting in the garage for the last nine years and I was just thinking of disposing of it. You can also have the two halves of crankshaft and the bent conrod too, if you like. It happened at Spa-Francorchamps, on the climb from Eau-rouge to Les Combes. Pulling just over 7k in top when the crank snapped. |

Boys..... If I were to bring a skip to the NEC, would you be able to fill it for me? It would go a long way to funding my racing next year... lol Matt, I have a complete Ital (A+) engine available. Mark. |

I've found a Marina short engine so I'm sorted, just got to collect it from Solihull now. |
