MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Medium bore silencer

I have a Maniflow 1 5/8" system and am about to give up welding the rear box. I have never known anything rust as fast as this does. I even had it blasted and powder coated and still it rusted - from the outside. I had to make and weld in a new inlet pipe as that disintegrated, and it looks as if it's about to do that again. I just rang Maniflow (they are only a mile or so away from me) and they want £125 for a new mild steel silencer. Seems excessive when a standard box is about £30. I have searched other suppliers and no joy. So does anyone know if a silencer for another car can be used? I could easily weld on a new bracket if necessary, to make it fit.

Les,
as always I might have this wrong but don't others use the RC40 back box?

I'm looking at something like this for mine:

I have got a Special Tuning steel silencer part no C-ARA 135 . Its the same size as the frogeye silencer but has the larger 1.5/8" inlet. I had a copy made in stainless steel matched to a 1.5/8 stainless steel pipe. On the Frog it looks good as it replicates the original but allows me to use the 1275 engine. I had to have the pipe modified so the silencer locates in same place as the original. The Spridget pipe results in the silencer being positioned the wrong side of the rear bumperette. Happy to loan the silencer or could get a quote from the firm that did mine originally

Bob, mine is also the wrong side of the bumper, which I don't mind at all. Can you tell me who did yours?

Hi Les it was Longlife exhausts 128 Stanley Park Road Carshalton Surrey. It was formerly the business owned by Mike the Pipe who retired a few years ago.
Bob Beaumont

Thanks Bob, it thought it might be Longlife. I have asked them to quote. I remember Mike the Pipe from way back!

Jetex do a range of silencers, both MS and SS, with a 1.75" OD, i.e. 1.625" bore. The link to Jetex is:

https://www.jetex.co.uk/custom-exhaust-parts/

We have used their 2" MS silencers for the last 20 years, and have only had to replace them once so far.

I use a Minispares RC40. I'm on my second one, about 10 years in one. 1 3/4 ID, fits (just) between the leaf spring and tank
Rob Armstrong

It's designed for an A series. Also, only £31 quid.

Thanks chaps - I have asked Jetex to quote, but Rob's link is dead.

If you copy and paste the link it will work.

It's all the '%20's in there that are stopping it from being clickable.

Jetex can't help - "we only have what's on the website".

The RC40 box might work but it's 1 3/4" not 1 5/8", and there is no bracket. Tailpipe would need to be changed also. Cheap but a bit of a faff.

There are loads of different exhaust fittings available, certainly sometimes a faff to find the right ones and make up a combination of fixing(s).

If you have a place nearby(-ish) you could try a place that does modding for more modern classics or a custom exhaust place that also fits custom exhausts (you don't have to have them fit it just that they're more used to one-offs) then you can have the box exactly as you want it (usually s/s but not necessarily).

I've had success "bodging" systems together using bits from the scrap pile at the local exhaust place. They're pretty generous about letting me have stuff.

Not that I'm suggesting anyone of this parish would bodge anything of course.
Greybeard

You could try ringing Kim at Magic midget for advice as they list an RC40 system for the Midget: http://www.magicmidget.co.uk/exhaust.them

Grey, my son is ace at making up systems out of odd scrap bits too - we call it custom fitting !

Thanks for the suggestions folks. For the time being I have repaired the old silencer. There were several small holes along the top and when I cut out that section I found that all the packing had gone. So I repacked with fibreglass and mineral wool and welded on a patch. Judging from my last weld repair, it could well outlast the owner! Nice not to have that reverberating snarl.
