MG Midget and Sprite Technical - metro steering wheel

Ive got an old MG Metro steering wheel,
Does anyone know if it will fit my early sprite solid steering column...?

It may depend on how early your Sprite is. MkI MkII Sprites have different splines compared to later cars (IIRC).

One way to answer this is too look at Mountney or motolita steering wheel boss part numbers for Metro and Min and compare to various ones for Spridgets.

E.g Motolita boss for a MkI and II Sprite is a BH4, a MkIII is a B24H and for a MkIV is a B25CH. Whereas an MG Metro is a B45, a MkI Mini is B1H, late model Minis B45 etc

I'd specualte thats because the self cancelling arrangement for the indicators or how the boss clears the column shrouds are different Mike.

I have a kn*&*ered thread on my column so cant remove the whole of the wheel assembly. So I made an adapter from some thick plate I had lying around. (its stronger than the wheel spokes). Removed the nuts from the centre of the three original wheel spokes and made the plate to adapt between those bolt holes and the bolt holes on the new wheel. I even got the rubbery MG bit back in the middle from my original 1500 wheel. Took two or three evenings of manufacture time as I had to do a lot of hand work with basic tools.

If you go down this route just be careful to get the wheel the right way up in your scheme of work as after doing my own tracking the centre spoke on mine is now in the way of part of the speedo. Doh.

Wheel is at my parents in Stockport, car is in Thailand... so i dont want to lug it all the way back if it's not going to fit...
Its a one piece , overmoulded design, see picture.
i measured as good as i could , hole is 22mm dia and has 48 splines.

My steering column is a solid one off an early car.

My current wheel is a 15.5" motolita which i love, but i get tangled up with it if i need to do some quick maneuvering :-).

This old MG Metro one is 14" so if it fits i can give it a try, then get it refurbished if i like it.
Does anyone have an early type steering shaft without a wheel fitted that they could measure and count splines ?
