MG Midget and Sprite Technical - MG Midget starter

Hello,
I would like to introduce myself at first.
My name is Stephan and I am from germany (so please apologize my english).
I am the owner of a 1972 MG midget, I bought last year in London and drove it home to germany.
At the moment I am looking for a new starter. I found out, that there are two different types, the 9 tooth type an the 10 tooth type. I could not find out, which type belongs to what car.
Somebody told me, that it doesnīt matter, both are fitting.
Could this be correct?

HI Stephan,

I really don't think it matters if you have nine or ten tooth, I only just found out there were two types !

Having seen the quality of new versus original parts I'd try and get my starter reconditioned rather than buy new, then that way you know what you are getting.

Stephan:

Your timing is very good....check out this very recent YouTube.com video from John Twist, a Mid-West MG legend:

There are references to a part number sequence that may break on a specific model year that might give you more insight into the 9 tooth versus 10 tooth issue...

Good Luck with your starter project...

Hi Stephan, welcome,

I might have remembered wrong but I thought I saw in a recent thread on here that it does matter about 9 or 10 teeth (you could try checking the Archive on here)

I hope someone will put if I'm right or wrong about this

as Mike has put the John Twist video are very informative, here's another JT video on the starter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6CR_8efA88

and another but this one is for a late MGB - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf82vFQc410

Thank you very much for your help.
The videos are very informative.
I found this on the archive which seems to be the right answer:

"The original design had 9 pinion teeth, but some ago Lucas changed to 10 teeth - no change to the ring gear. Doesn't appear that it should work but it does, and the additionl engine cranking speed is very noticeable."

My starter seems not to be the original one, so I think I donīt want to recondition it.
I will try a new one which is about 80.-€.

Stephan
