MG Midget and Sprite Technical - MGF seats again
I've been trawling the archive in search of info concerning the fitting of F seats, namely will they tilt forward to allow good access to the rear shelf? I noticed Guy Weller has done the conversion and has reversed the seat position for access to the rake handle. Does this handle also allow it to tilt forward. I can't believe Guy only paid £9.50 for a pair of leather ones. Have you seen them now? I'm about to offer £200 for a pair of black leather seats on ebay that the seller wants £225 for. But the main criterion is the forward tilt thing. Thanks. Bernie. |

Bernie, Yes they do tilt, but only by use of the rake adjusting knob which is very low geared and slow / stiff to use. I wouldn't rely on it to give access to the rear shelf. This doesn't matter in a square bodied car, but I can see that it would be critical in a Frog. It might be possible, with a bit of ingenuity, to disconnect the gearing for the rake adjustment and fabricate a latching system instead, utilising the same pivot arrangement. This would be much more convenient for tilting the seat back forward (?!) Guy |

Thanks for that Guy. I was under the illusion that they had a handle like the later midgets and Bs. My car is a '65 Sprite. Do you think the seats would impede access to the rear shelf with the hood up? If we are going away in the car that's where we put a couple of large soft holdalls. Bernie. |

'hood up' good heavens man what are you thinking of? ;-) |
David Smith |
David. It's 'er indoors. I've got the leather helmet and would have the hood down all(or most of)the time. And no, I'm not posting a picture of me wearing it! Bernie. |

Bernie, The MGF seats are no higher or more bulky than the standard Midget seats. The headrests are a little larger but I have never had any difficulty stowing things on the rear shelf in my '71 car. Guy |

No problem for me either. |
Arie de Best |
Even with armrest the rearshelf is still good acceseble.

fiat X1-9 seats also fit nicely, they are thinner on the back and seat parts, so better for a longer leggedy person. they also tilt forwards as well, on a litle lever thing like the originals http://www.flickr.com/photos/34910348@N08/3404384951/ |

Thanks guys. Nice arm rest Arie. What do you keep in there? |

I cant tell, this site is observed by MI5. ;) Phone charger, lighter, sigars, sweets and all bits that fall of the car and have to be put back some day... I have it mainly because of the arm support, i like it alot, very comphy! One arm on the armrest and the other on top of the door. I bought the armrest from a brittisch company: PJM Motors. |
Arie de Best |
Are Arie & Pop one and the same !?....Worrying similarities in the spelling ;-) |
Dean Smith ('73 RWA) |
Dean, give me a break, me are forreigner. :) To be honest, i cant even see my mistakes anymore(beside the grammar issues). ;) I guess its my "acceseble"? Looking up the right spelling takes too much time and an accent ads to my charming personality ;) |
Arie de Best |
Dean. At least it's Arie's second language. I wish I could speak and particularly write another language that well. Now Prop, that's a whole other thing. 1st language? Sorry Prop, no offence intended, you know we all love you, it's just that sometimes we can't understand your take on English. Bernie. |
