MG Midget and Sprite Technical - MGOC spares front spoiler

I've impulsively ordered a front spoiler wich will arrive next week.
As I am contemplating on this subject some questions arose.

How do you fix this thing to your front end, does it come with a fitting kit?

Anyone got a picture of a fitted one?

I'm not going to refit my bumper, so I thought: what do I need those two big holes for? Nothing, so I welded some metal plates behind them and filled the surface.
Alex G Matla

Hey ALex,

There where a number of spoilers over the years, do you have a photo, I have the old Amco spoiler, its not easy, if its the same spoiler, I can write it out how I did it, but its a long process, But Im vary happy with it.

Onno Könemann

Onno,

Finally got back my crank and stuff.
Dunno much about the quality but if it's in line with the price it better be f**king g*dd*mn good.

And the "K" has no front spoiler, yet...
But I did see the spoiler....
Alex G Matla

Prop,

I was a bit dissappointed when I checked my mail, I was anticipating your description for the front spoiler...(he he)

If all is right it will arrive tomorrow, so there's still time. I'll be checking my mail regularly (every 5 min orso)
Alex G Matla

Alex,
I atttached the spoiler with small stainless bolts as you may be able to see on the attached image.

Brian,

Looks good, nice car.
I'll be picking up the spoiler this afternoon, then I will be able to see what its all about.
Alex G Matla

Can I be so bold as to ask whether fitting a spoiler makes the slightest difference (other than 'spoiling' the nice line of a Midget front end)?
Chris H (1970 Midget 1275)

Well Chris, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The RB Midget is jacked up a bit (compared to your CB) and this exposes the receding chin of the front valace rather more. The spoiler counterbalances that(visually), improves cooling and helps keep the nose firmly down at all speeds.

Front Spoiler Installation Instructions By Prop

well here goes, This is what I did, so feel free to modifiy

1st off as you may have noticed by now, its REALLY flimsy, I took a piece of bendable metal rod, and epoxed it into the bottom lip around the bottom, that really firmed it up, next I took it so a rhino linner shop...they do spray-on bed liners, out off a hard plastic material (vary indistructable), this gave it a nice look and super strong and tuff as well.

remove bumber, then find the vertical center of the valance on the car and lightly mark it..(pencil, chaulk, ect.)

then find the center vertical on the spoiler and mark it,

then eyeball adjust the up and down so that it lines up okay in the recessesd pockets by the turn signals, and looks good, and make several alinement marks in the middle of the spoiler and car

next line use tape, blocks of wood, ect. to hold spoiler in place and look it over, you will need to make adjustments...

next, make lots of alinement marks all the way around...but mainly in the middle and not so much further out,

next take low stick masking tape and place along the outside edge of the spoiler on the car making an outline of where the spoiler will line up

get doulble stick foam tape and place a layer on the back side of the spoiler where it will attach ...leave the coating on the exposed side

do the same thing agian with the double stick tape, on the car, along masking tape edge

strip the coating off the exposed double stick foam tape thats on the car (Leave the coating on the spoiler double stick)

Use your alingment marks and start in the middle and apply the spoiler to the car, so that the double stick tape makes contact and is even and work it on starting in the middle an working both sides as you go

in the 2 ressesed pockets by the turn signals dont apply to much effort there, it will have a air pocket behind where it wont meet up

next use a razor knife and slip it in behind the coating that on the double stick foam tape starting in the middle, and slice it in haalf and work out and edge you can grab onto, pull back about an inch, and reapply pressure making a permenat bound , use a self taping screw and drill it in at the top edge where it wont be real visable going thur the spoiler the double stick tape and into the car(watch for anything befind the car metal), then continue pulling the coating and applying self taping screwes as you go working both sides until you get to the ressesed pockets, you may need to shave off some areas on to high spots with a razor knife, and use the double stick foam to fill in the shallow areas esp. at the deepest area, then pull off coating and make permenate stick when you are satisfiyed and apply self taper screws (few screws goes along way...I used 9 total)

peel of low stick masking tape, and reaplly new low stick masking tape about an 1/8th inch away from the spoiler / car body connection on both sides, (there should be a 1/4" un-taped area of the spoiler and the car going around the top of the spoiler

wrap your fingers tips with masking tape, use a tube of silicone chaulking..( the stuff that requires minerial spirits to clean up...NOT laytex based/NOT water clean up) run a thick heavy bead around the spoiler in between the masking tape tape you just applied, esp. over the areas in the ressesed pocket, use your taped finger tips to smooth it up, replace tape on fingers often as soon as silicone is applied and looks good and smooth, remove the low stick masking tape on both side (car and spoiler) DO NOT go back and try and make touch ups, make sure you like the look before you pull the tape

use mineral spirits to clean off any drips of the silicone chulking, use chaulking on top of screw heads of the self tapping screws, let chaulking dry 48-72 hours (no touching or driving) yeah it says it will cure in 24 hours but its a lie.

drive and enjoy

This took me the better part of 3 week to figure out, my guess plan on an entire saterday to install, but in the end I really like it, would I do it agian...hard to say, ask me when I install the chrome side pipes and flare the wheel arches to give it that aggresive look...personaly with out those modifications I think the car looks to heavy in the front, but I have alot going on in front also, chrome skinny bumpers, chrome slate grill, headlight grill covers, the hood spear, ect. BTW this instructions are for a black on green set up, Go I used black chaulking and the rhino linner is also black and im going to have the black rhino linner applyed to the rocker panal area at some point as well to match the spoiler and my hardtop that I had done the same way. I think the rhino linner can be painted, so you may have to apply extra thought if your doing yours the same color as the car.

let me know how you come along, if you need anything let me know

aka..alignment marks are marks that are the same single line on 2 seprate pieces of material

Wow sorry for all the broken language and spelling errors...yes I did graduate from the 3rd grade belive it or not

Prop, you do not have to appoligise, we painters are visual artists not writers.
We are gifted with fantasy and vision, not with grammar. ;)
Arie de Best

By the way...I meant to mention I like your company sign ...I saw it in one of the pics you posted, I couldnt read it all, but a good use of space and focasing peoples atten.

Prop,

Thank you very much for the effort and I will see what your method ends up to.

btw. I finally got started rebuilding the engine so it won't be long before I'll be able to see what the front end of my midget will look like (no bumper, no holes and a spoiler)
Alex G Matla

Thanks for the compliment Prop, im blushing now. :)
Arie de Best

Arie/Prop

no it is not artistic it is the fact that you have inhaled all those paint fumes all those years ;P
Onno Könemann

Onno, all great artists are on mind-expanding stuff and so are we except that the white powder you see on our nose comes from sanding and not from Colombia. :)
Arie de Best

Oh so true Arie, going to the store and forgetting to wipe your nose will get you lots of looks and huddled away children behind there mothers. LOL

I got to tell ya, I'm so glade to see some of the new "environmental" products that have come out in the last few years...makes life so much easier...

15 minute painters caulk
low dust non shrink spackling paste, expensive but I love that stuff
synthetic low Oder/low toxic primer...I REALLY LOVE, no more high where you feel your teeth, or need for a respirator
the New latex non-voc paints with Lots of ABS acrylic instead of titanium....
not to mention the progress of latex primer, its really making some head way. (not just your fathers drywall primer cut down 10 to 1 anymore)
the duel extreior primer/paint exterior one coats

definitely looking forward to the future of paint, its going to get interesting to say the least.
