MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget 1275 carburettor springs
Hi Could anyone out there describe or preferably send me a pic of the correct location for the three springs which attach at one end to the heat shield and the other to the choke and carbs?? One long and two short. Thanks Martin |

Does that help.... http://www.eatworms.org.uk/album/midget-HIF44/PICT0335.JPG |

The springs are for the throttles. The choke is returned by the solid choke cable and the crank springs. |

Kind of .. I can see one out of three. Thanks anyway M |

my present Midget has never had the middle spring fitted - I bought one but was told it wasn't needed so I gave it away |

Nigel, "my present Midget has never had the middle spring fitted - I bought one but was told it wasn't needed so I gave it away" You were incorrectly advised according to Moss who list a centre spring IS required: AEA602 RETURN SPRING, centre (long) 1 / vehicle AEC2075 RETURN SPRING, side (short) 2 / vehicle HTH |

Each of the short springs, is the butterfly return spring for the appropriate carb. The long spring, is to pull the centre actuating shaft back, against the pull of the throttle cable. If you have a sticky cable then often the two smaller springs on their own, might not be sufficient against the sticky cable to shut the butterflies. So really it's best to have all 3. |

Doug, thanks, I know it should be fitted but it was a pragmatic decision at the time I think as the spring I bought as the correct one (and probably was the correct one) was too long for my set up and when you’ve had as may carb parts and repair as I’ve had frankly you get to the stage of if it’s working leave it alone I have things done correctly by the book and still have problems so if an alternative works over a long test period I forget about it and deal with the next problem that shouldn’t be but is, usually they crop up when least expected or wanted |
