MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget 1275 Spigot bush

Hi all, bought a digital micrometer (£6.99 eBay special including post) and measured the hole in the end of the Maestro crank for the spigot bearing. It measured 21.92mm so presume it's 22mm (which is itself close to 7/8"). The A series input shaft measures 0.507 inches so presume it is 0.5 inch.

So I need a Spigot needle roller bearing, anyone know a supplier?

What size is the spigot bearing for a late 1275 midget?

Is it a needle roller type?

Is the Marina 1.3 the same size as the Midget one?

What size is the MGB spigot bearing?

Ive seen them listed on various web sittes...

I want to say peter may sells them....

When you get it, can you compare it to the same for a toyota 22re engine... Ive had a sneaky gut feel for some time they are one in the same.

Thanks

Btw... according to rivergate datsun 5 speed conversion, there was 2 differant sizes, the 7/8th was the most popular (according to MY memory)...

Unfortantly, thats all the details I remember on the 2 differant sizes

Trevor jessie would be the person to talk to on this one....that guy spends hours a day memorizing nut, bolt, and thread counts for every nook in the car

Thanks for the info. I did some snooping around the archives also. The Midget 1275 needle type is 0.75 inch OD. The hole in the Maestro grank measured 0.865 inch or 21.92mm. I wonder if I could use 22mm OD copper pipe (central heating pipe) to make up the difference? I've got some somewhere. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

That depends on whether it's from a reputable plumber's merchant, or a DIY store. The latter tends to have a much thinner wall.

Or could try a local well stocked hardware store.

I made my own solid brass/bronze self lube bushing severl years back...I got one that was close... stuck it in a drill and used a fine file and sand paper to work it into spec

Rob,

You could just turn up a phos bronze one to suit the two diameters without roller bearings.

If you cannot find anybody local to assist with a bit of machining, I may be able to assist as model engineering is another hobby (when time permits) and can turn up odd bits - would need to check materials in stock.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't an Oilite bush available in the size you require

I no longer have a nearby Oilite dealer handy :( but they can be found in "the book" no doubt

I wouldn't fancy buggering about trying to pack it out with a chunk of copper pipe.
:-)

Richard,

I wouldn't chose a solid phosphor bronze for the bush as it can't be lubricated easily. The benefit of the oilite is the porosity stores oil and the oil can flow in the bearing due to the hydrodynamic pressure when the bearing is in operation, they shouldn't be grease lubricated as it blocks the pores,

I had another look into the Maestro spigot bearing. I found a socket that was an interference fit into the hole in the end of the crank and it measured 0.872 inch so it's near as 7/8" as I'm likely to get. So from Simply Bearings I have ordered a 7/8"ODx3/4"ID Oilite bearing and a 3/4"ODx1/2"ID Drawn Cup needle roller bearing. And if it works out I will let you know.

Fingies crossed that will do it Rob

I'm hanging on for this one ;)

When the oilite comes, before you pop it in but after you are sure it will do, remember to load it with oil.

Bill1

Bill,

In Robs' case the Oilite is just a spacer from the dimensions he has given so oiling isn't likely to help, I might have thought soaking in solvent to remove the oil and appying some Loctite might be a better idea.

Rob,

Does the drawn cup needle roller bearing you've ordered have an integral lip seal, IIRC that is an option and what Ford use as standard.
David Billington

trust me not to read the whole thing

:)

hmm maybe even a tad of Stud'n'bearing fit

Bill1

Bill, there was no option for integral seal and the image just looked like a generic image so we will see when it is delivered. Or I can get one off eBay from Earlpart but they are a bit more expensive and don't quote a size. They say it fits Midget and Marina but didn't think that was possible. Or were early Marina same as Midget?

When the spigot bush arrived it only had a very shallow integral seal on both ends. So I went to Moss and paid for the correct one.

Picture shows installe Oilite bush and Needle roller Spigot bush. Everything went together without much force. Just a light hammer and block of soft wood to protect and keep it square as it went in.

The sharp eyed will notice splits in the edge of the Oilite bush. That was me, oops. The annular ring around the hole stopped me from getting the bush fully in so I tapped it in with a socket. I realised after that the socket had a radius where the nut end and 1/2 inch square end meet which had the effect of spreading the bush. Doh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a 1275 flywheel off a friend who had had it modified to fit on a Marina crank. It must have been a pre-A+ as it doesn't fit the Maestro A+. It looks like it has been opened out to about 3 1/8" but I measured the Maestro as 3 1/4" so it will need machining a bit more. Hey Ho, nothing is simple is it?
