MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget 1500 fuel problem at coldstart

I have a weber carburettor on my midget of 1978. But when trying to start the engine when cold, I have to pump on the gaspedal for about 30 times before the engine starts and keeps running.
If I don't do this, the engine stalls immediately and I have to start several times before fuel is put to the engine.
Please also notice that I have a mechanical fuel pump (new one). Once engine runs, (even after 1 minute), the problem is gone.

It is as if fuel runs back in the fuel line after a while when engine has been shutdown for a day.
Can an electronic fuelpump solve this problem ?? Or has it something to do with my WEBER carburettor???

Gerrit:

What kind of choke mechanism is on your Weber? Can you ascertain if it is functioning properly? My (DGV) Weber with mechanical choke starts right up every time. Is your carb newish or high-mileage? DCOE? A bad fuel pump can cause problems, but not just at startup as far as I know. The mechanical fuel pump, aside from it's poor location in the 1500 is certainly adequate for the DGV carb's fuel requirements, at least in my experience.

Richard,

I have a Weber 32/36 DGV 5A with manual choke. Carb is high-mileage (I think) but once engine has started, choke works fine.

I just have to start several times, and each time the engine starts it stalls after a second just until you try enough.
As if suction of the fuel to carb is difficult ...

very strange

what can I check ?

Gerrit

the 32/36 DGV 5A has an accelerator pump and the fault description given sounds like faulty delivery when the pedal is pressed

check the accelerator pump on the side of the carb, sounds as if the diaphragm may be split or perished

or the lever from the throttle has become disconnected

you should get a spurt of gas into the choke when the pedal is pressed if the pump is ok

the item in the red square is the pump, the diaphragm is behind the casing there
