MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget Differential Parts

I believe I can cure the 'clunk' in my 1275 midget back axle by replacing the thrust washers behind the sun wheels and planet gears.
Whilst these parts are listed as available by MG and Morris suppliers, replacement cross pin-securing pegs (part no. 6K631) are not. Is there a recommended alternative: roll pin, split pin, whatever?
Also, Moss list two thicknesses for the planet gear washers. How do you decide which is correct ?
Thanks.

Hi,

About that little spring pin, originally it was a 5/32 x 1" dowel pin.
BMC service started replacing the solid pin with roll pins at some point.
Unfortunately, none of the usual MG parts suppliers stock either one.
Gainger sells these (spring steel, RC46, approximately 220 ksi tensile strength), Grainger part number 5EB34. Because it is a spring fit into the hole, it will have a natural resistance to movement/chafing, which might help minimize the wear that is often seen on OEM (dowel) pins after removal (there is not much load on this little pin, the driveline forces are taken by the steel diff cage, but it is very important because if the cross pin ever were to shift it could quickly destroy the whole differential).

Hope this helps.
Also, here is a link to an article on the MGE website about replacing the thrust washers in a Midget differential.

Regarding the thickness of the thrust washers, it is best to get both thicknesses and see which fit best, then send back what doesn't fit, since it isn't possible to tell before starting which will be used and it is difficult to tell what was originally in there because they sometimes wear quite thin (hard to measure what you need from just the disassembled parts).

The subject of the retaining pin being NLA came up last year.

Anyone remember the outcome?

The only sun gear washers I've ever seen with significant wear are the tufnol ones and have seen a few where all that is left is the bit in the root undercut where the sun gear runs in the differential cage. I have a few bronze and steel thrust washers and they are hardly worn at all. Unfortunately I think all the replacements these days are tufnol.

Sadly ... I remember what happened, it was caught on video
