MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget Dizzy
well i took my 1500 along to the mot man today after about 6 months of tinkering. she passed with only to notes (wheel bearing and slight kingpin movement). Unfortunately, on the way home, i broke down. a bit of searching found that the dizzy had seized, and wasnt turning with the engine. i removed it and freed it. quick refit and she fired up with no problem. i think its time for a new dizzy. i have been having a look at some and found this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MG-midget-1500cc-AccuSpark-electronic-distributor-/390264512142?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5add93de8e#ht_2205wt_1139 anyone used these before? cheers |

Hmmm .... normally a seized dissy would require the teeth on the drive gears to break in order to be static with engine turning... A |

Agree with Anthony, Unless the clamp had loosened up allowing the body of the dizzy to lift enough for the dog tooth connector to disengage from the drive shaft. |

It's more likely to that some idiot has 'mullered' the dizzy pedestal so the dog wasn't properly fully engaged when it was clamped up. I saw this recently on a customer's vehicle. |

Rich - to answer your question - accuspark are a pretty well regarded company, and plenty of people run their systems with great success. Before fitting it however, make sure that you have a matching coil - it will save you more work in the long run! Glad you passed your MOT and are still enjoying tinkering with the car. |

Hi Rich! I have just fitted an accuspark dizzy and sport coil from e-bay to my 1275! its been working great! If you look to buy a coil too as a package its a great price! Defo recommend! steve |

A 1500 requires a ballasted coil. The ballast resistor is built into the +ve IGN feed to the coil (White wire). If you fit a non ballasted coil you will get a weak spark and possible running problems. This can be overcome by putting in a new IGN feed but you would also have to disconnect the 12v Starter 'Jump Feed' to the coil (White/Green wire). |

Accuspark do a ballasted coil for the 1500. I think it's the new blue one they're were plugging at Silverstone. Les |

hi all. it was odd with the seized dizzy, when cranking the engine (with the cap off) the lug didn't move, when i removed the dizzy, i couldn't move the shaft by hand. i used pliers on on the shaft to free it. once it was back in, the car fired up, and i managed to being the car home. i think i might as well replace it, dont want it to happen again. i noticed that there is a coil and dizzy deal, and it states "in order to fit the AccuSpark High power coil the Midget ballast wire will need to be bypassed Remove the 2 white/green wires from + side coil and tail off . Run a new feed from non fused side of fuse box ( white wire ) to + terminal of coil " are there any issues with removing the ballasted supply/feature? plenty more tinkering to do :D i was also pondering about fitting megajolt to the midget, but i'm guessing because it is standard, it wont really do anything then i have to fix my mini, it never ends :D |
