MG Midget and Sprite Technical - midget voltage
I have a friend with a 1962 maybe 1963 midget who has been told to change his wiring from 6 volt to 12 system while restoring the car. Were these a 6 volt system. If so what is required to make the change. I Have not seen the car. |

They were always 12 volt to begin with. Maybe they were advising to change from positive ground to negative ground? That said, I don't remember if they were positive ground to begin with, but I know the early MGB was positive ground. Charley |

Yes, they were always 12 volt and, unless someone changed it, it would be positive ground. There is no reason to change it to negative ground unless you're installing something that requires it like an alternator or radio. Electronic ignitions can be purchased either way so that's not a problem. Later cars with alternators are obviously negative ground. |

Thanks, didn't think so, but he insets that was what he was told. This poor guy has really gotten poor information. |

Sounds like they might be thinking of VWs. |

He says it had a six volt battery in it when he received it and has had it to two mechanics. I guess not British car guys. No wonder nothing want's to work properly. I have B's, a 76 midget and TD and understand the positive/negative ground stuff . Not familiar with this year of midget so just wanted to get the correct information. Hope to see the car this weekend. Thanks for the comments |
