MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget water pipe. Where to buy?
Hi people, My 1972 midget has dropped all of its water, through what I must say is a _really_ tiny hole in the water pipe that sits behind the radiator. Heres the pipe. It comes away pretty easily. http://tinyimage.net/images/49055328101155806074.jpg Here's the tiny hole. The water came out pretty fast :) http://tinyimage.net/images/65507383633903540256.jpg I'm relatively new to MG ownership. Where should I look for a replacement part? Does anyone make brand new parts? I've found a radiator AND pipe on ebay, but I only need the pipe. Is there a name for the part that I could put in google that might give me more luck? Variations of "bottom water pipe" don't seem to bring back a lot joy :-/ James |

James, Its part number is AHA 8731 tube lower. It should be available from all the usual outlets - Moss, Sussex Classic, Beehive etc. About £22 from Moss in my catalogue. Worth getting a copy of the Moss catalogue - all parts shown - its free from Moss - google Moss Europe - essential reading ! R. |

Brilliant! Thanks. I've ordered the part and a catalog. Wasn't even sure if new parts were available :) That website looks like it'll be useful in future. Bookmarked :) |

Hi James, Moss are just one supplier of parts, most suppliers get their parts from the same sources Some, very few, new parts, especially electrical, can be poorly made or faulty, see later Ashley Hinton is good for a few parts made with original tooling (I think) - http://www.mgcars.org.uk/ah/ - you can email him direct or see his stuff on eBay Moss parts catalogue is a good place to start but see my comment in next post |

Sorry James had to post in two parts as I think forum doen't like too many hyperlinks in one post(?) Some good advice for new owners - buy an owners Handbook as it tells you so much you need to know as to own, drive, service and maintain your car - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Online_Catalogue_Handbooks_5.html always have the battery in good condition and all battery connections and leads clean, secure and protected, same for all electrical wiring and connections as soon as possible do a full and proper 36,000 miles service only miss out items that you have 100% proof have already been done very recently, including; g/box and back axle oils brake and clutch fluids coolant dissy cap, rotor arm and leads (buy good quality ones) - http://www.distributordoctor.com/rotor_arms.html fan belt be aware that brand new parts can sometimes be faulty, especially electrical bits (see just above) so don’t discount them when problem solving just because they are new, buy good quality parts change rubber coolant hoses to silicone when you get the chance - http://www.classicsiliconehoses.com/ check the age of your tyres if they are 6 years old or more replace ASAP regardless of tread depth, this will improve, the braking, steering, ride, handling and possibly noise, of the car greatly use the car regularly - to get used to it, sort out any wrinkles and prevent others, and enjoy it plus problems can come through lack of use every few weeks check your horn, wipers and all switches work and heater valve turns on and off (all no problem if you use the car regularly) follow regular checks, servicing and maintenance as per owners Handbook drive in all weathers, the Midget hood should be very watertight if fitted correctly and the heater is more than adequate, if working correctly, for the small cabin don't do any cosmetic or improvement work for at least 12 months of regular use, unless you need to replace parts or components, as you may need to use the money elsewhere on the car also very useful, you can get suppliers catalogues for free to get you started to see where things go but in my personal opinion they’re not as good paper copy like - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Online_Catalogue_Parts_Lists_3.html Cheers, enjoy your car |

Parts can be bought from many suppliers. I like MGB Hive (they also do Midgets)http://www.mgbhive.co.uk/ Sussex Classic Car Parts http://www.sussexclassiccar.co.uk/ Magic Midget is great for special bits http://www.magicmidget.co.uk/ and there are others. Almost all will happily discuss problems on the phone. |
