MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Misfire

Took the midget out yesterday after fiddling with the carbs due to recent erratic running. Drove to Ipswich, some 40 miles distant and started out with the engine running reasonably well but wouldn't accellerate past 50-60 mph and stalled when stationary.

On the return journey the engine started to misfire and I struggled home on three cylinders for much of the way. On the level or downhill it picked up on all four, but was misfiring badly when put under load climbing hills.

Removed th plugs today, and the plug on no.2 cyl. was dirty with something resembling a black glaze on it. During the run the tacho remained steady, so no problem with the low tension cicuit.

Any advice would be appreciated.

No.2 contact pole in the dizzy cap - No.2 HT lead - No.2 plug cap - No.2 plug itself.

I'd eliminate these before looking elsewhere.

Do the plug pull test first to check that disconnecting lead 2 doesn't make it run worse and confirm that #2 is the problem. Then swap ~2 plug with one of the others and see if the fault follows the plug, or stays with that cylinder.

ALARM!!!!

Use rubber gloves or insulated pliers - remember what happened to Willie...........

Also check for corrosion on the spike screw that secures the plug wire to the dissy cap
