MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Misfiring/cutting out

Just had to share this one with you all! The olde 1275 has been laid up for a while now - started as a clutch problem but when I had finally sorted that, and fitted a new clutch the engine wouldn't run very well - kept cutting out, very suddenly and would then either carry on running or stop...then start ok...really intermittent. I managed to prove the wiring wasn't at fault by sticking another +ve 12v direct on the coil. Changed the coil for a spare I had...still the same...I ended up taking the Aldon ignitor kit off the distributor and put an old set of points on it that I had lurking in my "bits box".....couldn't believe it - ran like a dream !!!!! Has anyone else had one go faulty? Must admit it has been on the car for the last 10 years at least however you don't expect a solid state unit to go faulty do you? Of course I'll be sending it back for a replacement - ha - Neal

BTW - many thanks to BoB (midget Turbo) for some helpful advice some while ago in Lincoln whilst promoting the Car Club - it all helps!.. Neal

the wires look quite fragile (to me) on those units, any chaffing inside dissy or out

possibly (I don't know) that's how these units fail, out like a light

I swapped my Aldon igniter head for a 1-2-3 dissy as I didn't like the look of my old dissy and was very pleased

Points are one of the first thigs to go for me

Hi Nigel - I agree - the wires do look v.fragile but they are very flexible/rubberised. There is no way that I could prove them though as they are moulded into the pick up module. I may keep the points in for a bit and do some real vintage motoring ;0)

wires - yes but where they're strapped to the top plate and the run outside the dissy to the coil

points, lovely, apparently you have to rest them after 500 miles (bedding-in) and
then if they work don't change them just clean them at services

is it still best of three to find the one that works :)

sooner you than me, I have fat fingers and poor eyesight

You'll probably have no problems at all and they'll last for years if I had them they'd close up after a week and never set right
