MG Midget and Sprite Technical - more chassis questions

i am still grafting my two halves together for my rubber bumper midget, but have a couple of questions. i won't be using any bumpers from here on out, so can i remove these sections that aren't normally on the chrome bumper cars? is there only intended use for the bumper reinforcement?

see pic below

I have done away with the rubber bumpers on mine as I'm going down the K series route. I've shortened the box section that the bumpers bolt to by about 4-5 inches. That way I can fit a grill, at the back I'm chopping out and smoothing off the rear mounts. I've been told in the past that the 1500 shell is better due to been more rigid. I'm assuming these structures in the front have something to do with it? I'd would leave them in personally.

Same here... I'd tend to leave them for extra chassis strength, esp. as you're joining two shells...

that's what i thought. i knew i had to lop off some of it at least to get the grill in there, but wasn't sure if anything would need to be relocated because of it.

Right, the chassis rails were added for the 1500. They provide mounting points for the bumpers, and then feed impact loads into the body shell, in addition to generally stiffening up the front structure. There are similar beams welded into the boot to support the rear bumper.
