MG Midget and Sprite Technical - need some help whistle

OK Folks
I just replaced the exhaust manifold gasket on my 1971 1275.
I was told that the whistle was coming from a bad gasket. So I cleaned eveything off and got it all back together and it's back.
So it is coming from the back side of the motor on the right side it seams.
So what do you folks think it could be now.
Thanks all

My guess.....Roger Whitaker is still alive in the boot of your car...just give him another slug in the head with the bat... that should do it..or let him go.

id say look for any holes in the body work where the moving air can get to them...

does it do it standing still or while driving at speed...does the sound go up and down with speed

also check that its not a bearing, or loose/worn belt...

check your brake pads for wear...they my have screechers installed

if it does it standing still take about 3-4 feet of 1/2 inch ID.hose (garden hose) and go over the engine with the hose next to your ear....untill you hear it in the hose.

well it seams do it when the car is at idel.
When it is under throutle you do not hear it, but as soon as you get to crusing speed the noise is back.

Not a lose belt new , not brakes new work done is a new water pump new cluth and through out bearing and now a new manifold gasket.

So I am at a lost

Thanks for any help

well thats a good thing....can you increase engine while in nutral and speed the engine to between 3000 - 4000 rpm and hold the rpms for a time and get the whistle to come back on...if so your half way there

just get some rubber hose about 3 feet long with 1/2 inside diameter hold one end to your ear, and use the other end to move over the engine area to find the whisstle where its the loudest...and let us know where that spot is at.

you didnt overthighten the belts did you, you want some deflection....I go to the center of the belt between the fan pully and the crank and push in ...with out alot of effort if it goes in between 1/2 inch to 1 inch then its fine...IMHO

opps... make it alittle more clear

Id use the rubber hose at ideal 1st, then onc you have tracked down the area.....THEN...speed the engine up to around 3500rpms or where ever running speed is at then re-check the area with a hose agian to varify thata where the whistle is cooming from.

Hi Prop
Your rubber hose suggestion reminded me of something I did once (and only once) Used a hose trying to track down a manifold leak on a F250 Ford ambulance and got this allmighty whack in the ear. It turned out that the piece of hose I had was a piece of hydraulic hose with the metal reinforcing layer in it and it collected a spark off a nearby sparkplug and sent it direct to my ear, Gary

gary,

LOL. now thats what I call a shocking story.....maybe thats what they mean by auditory flash

Ill have to remember to look more closely at my hoses for listening purposes
