MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New air filter-yes/no?

Looking ahead to spring...is it worth it to replace the old box (1500) with a new air filter? I've been looking at either K&N or Longflo. Is it worth the cost and do they just bolt on?
TIA

Not sure about the performance gains...bought my 1500 back in June & it had been previously converted over to a Weber DGV, so no base line to compare it to.

Back in the day, I replaced the stock box on my TR GT6 (twin Strombergs) with similar style free flow assemblies & they made a slight, but noticeable difference. I also recall doing something with the needles & seats that made an even bigger difference, but that's been 30+ years ago & memory's a bit foggy...

Personally it's worth the cost just for the look and the wonderful induction sounds...it sounds great at full throttle!

My current set up:

What does a longflo filter look like? I think the K&N is hard to beat and www.aptfast.com in the USA stocks them, made by a near neighbour I believe!
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

The longflo is in the Victoria catalog. It's oval with a wire mesh design holding a foam filter.

is a K&N worth it?

well it is the last filter you will ever need to buy
you can clean and reoil every time.
so yes it definitly is worth it just from a replacement point alone

I prefer ITG filters over K & N.

The testing that we've done indicates they filter just as well but flow better.

I've had ITG on my midget 1500 and it does the job - better than the K&N type I had previously.

Mike-
The foam Longflo will not flow as much air as a set of K&N's. As Onno said, you can clean and reoil K&N's, so they'll be the last air filter that you'll ever need to buy. They filter down to 2 microns, which is plenty good enough. I've been using them for longer than I care to admit.

So when I go to order the K&N http://www.victoriabritish.com/icatalog/sm/full.aspx?Page=30
I see that it costs $70 but then below it I see there are filter elements listed. Do I need to order both or does it come all in one package?
Mike Taylor

the filter elements are replacements for the std paper filters
just buy the complete one the original housing is rather restrictive

Rumor has it that converting to K & N filters will necessitate a richer needle in the carb(s), due to freer flow and the resultant drop in vacuum at the carb. I can't verify this, but it's come up before.

you can also just turn the su down 2 flats
IF NEEDED!!!!

just check your plug collor the first while

Think I would be a bit wary of ITG filters - had a set on the dino and they fell apart after a year - literaly crumbling away. Also some evidence on the net that they are not as fireproof as they could be.

Never had any problem with my ITG filters on a standard'ish 1500. My ealier Pipercross ones went a bit crusty and fell apart along the seams.
