MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New Bonnet leading egde....
Hi all I recall reading somewhere that a new leading edge panel could be had rather than scrapping an otherwise OK bonnet Does anyone know where from?? I've looked at Moss (online), MGBhive and On Fleabay without success.. I had a spare bonnet that didn't seem too bad so i set about it yeasterday ith a rotary file, it ended up like Swiss cheese (had to take my time due to broken ribs), i filled the holes with weld that were small enough to run round with the mig, one hole (or rather a series)i ended up cutting a small (4") plate and welding that in.. The results weren't too bad and where it was very thin, it was blown away so i ended up chasing the hole filling with weld as i went along.. I took a few pics of how badly it was affected (infected??) with Tinworm!!!!!... John.. |

Nice work John. I don't think that repair panel is still available, haven't seen one listed in the catalogs for years and my bonnet is in need of similar repair as yours. |
Bill Young |
Thanks Bill They probably discontinued the the replacement front end panel when the realised that people would have to pay £380 for a full bonnet (hood) from moss :-( John... |

As Bill says, they haven't been available for a while. They do come up on ebay from time to time, though. |

Nice job John, what's bondo? is that some sort of body filler? |
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo |
Nice job John. Now drill a couple or more of 1/2" diameter holes on the underside, just back from the leading bullnose edge. To allow water out and air in. They rust from the inside as I am sure you know - I believe it is caused by condensation forming on the underside of the bonnet and running forwards and down into the back of that section. Spraying waxoyl in there seems like a good idea too! |

Bob I believe Bondo is the name of body filler in the US... John :-) |

Guy This was the underside of the leading edge... John.. |

Hmmm I think i will have to get the underside sand blasted and treated for the rust on it... some of the welds (following the holes round until they're filled... John... |

nice job, But I seriously doulbt bondo will help that wheel in photo #4 yes bondo in is a popular brand of body filler, its also a generic word that repersents all body fillers here in the USA |

"nice job, But I seriously doulbt bondo will help that wheel in photo #4" Ha Ha Ha!!! Prop The two damaged wheels were off my BMW318iS, i was on my way to work one dark and wintery morning when a police car came up behind me- he was really hammering it then switched his siren on!!! Scared me half to death and i threw my car to the left and hit a high kerb, as a result both nearside wheels were scrap- i'll bet the coppers had a good laugh about it over their breakfast.... John.. |

MS12 was the panel you required or HMP415001/2 Unfortunately it is No Longer Available, however, i see nothing wrong with what you have done above - just be sure that you get plenty of paint in the back of the repairs once you have finished to prevent relapse |

Hi Peter Thanks for the info, i've decided that the underside of the bonnet needs sandblasting to get rid of a lot of surface rust that's evident, there's a couple of blasting companies close to where i work, in fact thinking about it, one of my cousins husband is a boss at one of them (Ha!!- rostyles need a refurb too!!).. i think i'll apply some of the Jenolite rust inhibitor then before waxoyling it.... It's a shame that no one sells the bonnet repair panel though as rust on the leading edge seems a very common occurance (it was on both of my bonnets :-( ) cheers, John.. |
