MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New front wheel bearing play

I have a new set of front bearings fitted and once the nut is tightened to the right torque there’s play. Tightening up the nut further doesn’t get rid of the play.

What to do?

Try more torque ( isn’t this going to stress the axle too much?)
Shim behind the bearing?
Reduce length of spacer?

And what’s the best way of removing the bearings without damaging them? The spacer prevents access to the drift groves, there is only access to the inner race.

Freezing the bearing with plumbers freeze spray and drift it out?

The best solution is to fit proper bearings, which have been made to the correct tolerances.

You could try returning the new bearings as unfit for purpose. The seller will probably say "we've never had anyone complain before"!

There is loads in the archives about FWBs, if you've a couple of days to spare.

I have some original RHP face-adjusted bearings, if you're interested.

Does Chris Buckenham at Medi-Tech (??) still offer his face-corrected FWB sets?

Sounds like Dave is correct. Once torqued up there shouldn't be any play should there? Sounds like the new bearings are out of spec.

FWBs...
Put your hand on the shoulder of the man in front and we'll all cross the minefield together haha!

A quick visual check is to look and see if the disc is running mid-way between the slot in the brake caliper. If it is visibly off centre then your newly supplied FWBs are not correct for this application.

The bearing kit was bought off eBay from Paul Depper MGs and was listed as part number GHK1142 which matches the Moss number.

I’ll put the caliper on tomorrow and check the gaps......

Even getting the hub back off again can be a challenge. The inner bearing will probably come apart as it is jammed on the stub axle.

Chris,
you want the face-adjusted sets - Wheel Bearing Kit - factory spec midget GHK1142Q – (the Q is the important bit hence the price difference) from MGOC Spares or Sussex Classic MG Car Parts –

Do NOT reduce the spacer.

Do NOT rely on only one supplier for all the parts as the likes of Moss and MGOC Spares commission remakes of different parts and can also offer different alternatives to original parts, some good and sometimes not.

Let's have another FWB thread! Is that a "NO!" ?
