MG Midget and Sprite Technical - new fuel pump

Hello all,--I certainly would appreciate any input on this subject. I am about to rebuild a 1275 to replace my 948 in the bugeye. This particular block has a hole in the side for a mechanical fuel pump. I have heard that the pump for the 948 will work just fine in the 1275 although Burlen says it is a different part number.(sometimes part # only reflect application and not actual product,I think)Anyway, with todays fuel would it be better to go this route or #1:put in a Facett pump, or #2 go to a new Lucas unit.If I go to the Lucas unit, does the entire unit live under the car or would I have to cut a big hole in the boot floor? Btw, I wonder where this mech pump 1275 came out of? regards, Bob Chamberlain in Kansas where the temp has finally dropped below 100f

I would use a blanking plate and buy a Facet. The beauty of the midget is that there's so little height difference between tank and carb that you don't have to worry whether a pump is a pusher or a puller. So you can install the pump where you like within reason, either in the 'trunk' or under the 'hood' :-)
David Smith

In the trunk will leave you with fumes as I have and a very clean pump. Take care the new pump has the same pressure output otherwise you need a fuel pressureregulator. SU carbs need very little pressure otherwise the floatbowls will overflow.

I've got the little square solid state facet pump, and use SU's as well as 45DCOE (not at the same time ofcourse). No pressure regulator and no problems at all. (bit noisy, thats all)

Where did you mount it?

I just bought the one you're describing & I'm looking for a suitable mounting location.

Ive got a (temp) pump Mr gasket ... it has to be mounted below the fuel tank or it will not pull or push the fuel..

make sure the pump in low pressure ... 1.5 psi

I bet the hole was NOT for a fuel pump but a an air breather...for a modified evac system to help control blow by,

Im not sure But I dont think cams for the 1275 have the special lobe to run the fuel pump...certianly look at the cam 1st before going forward

Id certianly talk to OUR resident SU fuel pump guy david debuis, and go with a good SU pump, I know they get a bad rap, But to work 35 years none stop is saying something...Im keeping my points SU pump

the pump goes in the back wheel well USA passangers side, on the bulk wall that forms pat of the rear self, it also sits at an angle and the hose and wiring follow the curveture of the wheel/axle arch

the great thing about the SU, is it runs and stops and is powered by (Fuel pressure I guess) but the fauct pumps run ... NON-Stop.

Besides its just not right to turn the key on for 10 sec. and listen to the ticking sound before starting the car

Sorry I mmeant to say its wrong ethically to not hear the ticking sound before starting the car

Alex probaply did the same as i did
replace the old su pump for the facet.

So it is on the old place just need to tinker with the mounting a bit.
And do mount it in rubbers otherwise the noise is a bit to hard
Onno Könemann

Onno isnt jokeing ...lots of soft rubber under the pump is your BEST friend. or high end ear plugs and a powerful radio

Lucas only makes high pressure pumps for fuel injected vehicles, the electric pump for MGs is the SU pump, which today can be has in the original points style (which will work well if the car is driven regularly) or in an all electronic version (that looks and sounds the same as the points style and should be the pump of choice for a car that is not driven regularly). The Facet pump will work fine if it is the low pressure version (1.5psi - 4psi). the noise can be controlled by using sound mounts with it.

By the way, there is no such thing as a pusher or a puller pump, only the application they are used in(see the article, SU Fuel Pumps Facts and Myths in the SU Fuel Pump Articles on my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/). All pumps have sufficient inlet side vacuum to pull fuel up to the top of a house if necessary and both the low pressure and high pressure have sufficient pressure to push the fuel from the tank to the carburetors in any of our cars. Cheers - Dave

Dave, just put the facet pump in the same location as the SU. There was a threaded hole wich I could use. No rubber dampening of any kind.
