MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New stage 2 or 3 cylinder head

Hi all, I have MK3 midget, mine for 18years. I want to upgrade the 1275 engine which is in fine nick. first is a new or reworked cylinder head. In the Mini Magazines there are many adverts for new heads. Question is which one? There must be stacks of experience in the Club, can you advise please, also, am looking at having existing head reworked. I have heard that A Richard Longman does good work, where do I find him ? Many thanks Beegee

I've only been on his rolling road but this would be where I'd start if I was looking - Peter Burgess, advertises on on this BBS (top of page)

The stages are not something to rely on.

They are not a uniform way of determening the specs of a head.

If you want to fit a better flowing head then you have to discuss your wishes with a supplier and let him pick the head you need.

For example, if you want to keep your stock botom end and just want a bit more power and replace that worn old head.
Then you could use a head with std valves, cleaned up port throats, 3 angle seats, slight deshrouding and increase of CR

Or you want a wild cam, big bore screamer and head to fit.
Then you go for big valves, 3 angle seats, fully worked ports and manifolds to match, reworked chamber and highest CR possible.

The first head will not work as good on the second engine and vice versa.
With the expense to match

Peter would be perfectly suited to give advice and supply you with a head suited to your wishes
