MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Next Question if you don't mind !

Hi All,
1275 MkIII midget
On the resto home stretch now.
When I replace the ignition. full beam & trafficator indicator warning lamps, do the lamp holders unscrew or simply pull out- I haven't gone upside down in the wheel well to look yet & wonder if anyone else has?
I was advised to remove the tacho to get more room to work in....but can't see how to do that either.
thanks all

They pull out.

Tacho has 2 threaded bars at rear; on each, there's a small strut that projects to the dash, and is tightened onto it by a knurled nut. It's easy to undo these nuts (there should be black earth wire under one of them) plus shakeproof washers.

Remove the stuts, and the tacho will come out forwards... sometimes becomes stuck to dash with o-ring, so needs a little encouragement.

Like Anthony says, --- and here's a pic of the rear end of my speedo in situ, same method of removal for the Tacho.

Hi Lawrence & Anthony
Excellent - thanks so much for your help...saturday job set up now!

Colin,
I suggested removing the tachometer to get better access to the back of switches by reaching in via the tachometer mounting hole. But if all you need to do is fix the warning light bulbs then you can probably do this more easily by reaching up from beneath the dash. And save having to fiddle around with the knurled nuts, washers and brackets for the tachometer!

If you have a reasonable understanding (i.e. from Lawrence's excellent photo) of what is behind there it is easier to just do it by feel, rather than trying to get your head into a position to see what your fingers are doing! For some reason, this process is aided if you shut your eyes. There must be some good reason for that rather odd assertion, but it is true!

You must take great care with the Ignition lamp. It is NOT earthed to the body of the dial and if it is placed in the wrong unit you will burn the wiring.

The ignition lamp fits in the rear of the Tacho (I think) and that holder is insulated.

Guy,

Thanks for confirming the method of closing eyes when doing something you can't see. I thought that was just me. I agree, it seems easier to do it if you close your eyes. I have no idea why that is either.

perhaps because when your eyes are open they see something different to what your hands are feeling and so the information received by the eyes is not helping, merely giving your brain extra unwanted, and distracting info which it has to block out. If you shut your eyes then touch is the only sense feeding the brain and so makes it easier to think about what your doing?

well that's my uneducated reasoning.

Greg,
Good reasoning! So next time its headphones and a nose clip as well then!!
