MG Midget and Sprite Technical - No room for the heat shield with the Maniflow LM03

Good evening Gentlemen
Finally, today I installed the Maniflow LM031 LBC manifold. Next step was to install the induction parts. But here was the next obstruction, the middle tube is preventing the heat shield to be placed.
Maniflow did not warning me, when I ordered it in November, that there's no room for the heat shield anymore, when fitting an LM031 in an otherwise stock MG midget 1275.
As you know, the heat shield contains the throttle cable holder.
I will figure out something, it's time consuming, and once again I feel betraded by a supplier.
Another thing, the manifold was not a good fit, I had the heat and bend it a little, so that it does not hit against the subframe.
I'm not impressed..........as with many other parts from different suppliers.....

Jan,

One thing that I have found to be very useful in situations like this is a hammer. Mark were the shield touches the manifold and then deform/bend it so that it clears by placing the shield on two blocks of some kind with a space between where the deformation should be and start tapping. Clamping the shield to the blocks will probably make it easier to get the desired shape where you want it.

The trick is to cut a slotted hole in the middle of the heat shield. I had to do this when I fitted the ST manifold.
Bob Beaumont

That's the options I considered. I'm reluctant, though to use the hammer, afraid to bend it too much out of shape, so that it will not fit over the studs. I chose the slotted hole.
But my point was why do the suppliers keep on making and selling parts that don't fit, without any warning.
Jan Kruber

Why not you use aluminuim or phenolic spacers?

I recall that BL special tuning did indicate that it is necessary to modify the heat shield when fitting an LCB on the 1275cc cars. Been trying to find the instructions.
Bob Beaumont

As John Smith said: no pets or children were harmed. It just delayed the assembling. I did the "cutting a slotted hole" version.

Hi,

Been looking through the archives to see how I can overcome the heat shield problem.

As with Jan’s issue my manifold doesn’t fit with the heat shield supplied for my 1965 MK2.

It is the two outer pipes that are causing the gap and I’m looking for a little more clarification on what mods I need to do.

When Bob says cut a slot in the middle can you clarify how that helps in this situation please.

Many thanks

James

James,

You will need to fit the phenolic or ally spacers first then the heat shield so it clears the two outer branches. It normally still needs the slot to be cut in the shield to clear the centre branch. I have a different manifold which allows the shield to clear but still needs the centre to be cut out. Hopefully the images help

Hi Bob,

I was going to ask first if it mattered which side the spacers went.
Sounds like it doesn’t matter.

Also I did think about cutting out slots for the throttle linkage if that’s what you mean.

Assume three should do it

Thanks

James

James Paul

I think the phenolic spacers have to go on first, before the heat shield. Then the carb flanges go against the heat shield so that the shield acts as the stop for the throttle cable quadrant.

This is the only way I can see it working. Bigger hole thank I was expecting to end up with but so much of the throttle linkage gets in the way and you have to make room for the springs to move.

Have painted it in silver VHT that I had left over from the exhaust.

Thanks

James

Yes that looks about right. The key thing is the carb float bowls are away from direct heat from the manifold and protected by the shield.
Bob Beaumont

All sorted!

Running nice and smooth again ☺️

Thanks

James Paul

Glad its sorted. Just one comment, the float bowls appear to be at an odd angle. The tops should be more or less horizontal.
Bob Beaumont

Camera angle!

Ah Ha!!
