MG Midget and Sprite Technical - noise coming fom carbs

Hello,
I just picked up my 1275 midget from the garage after having a new gearbox and diff.
After driving for half an hour there's a very loud rattle/clancking noise coming from around the carbs at low speed. As soon as I get to 20mph it goes completely.
It looks like the throttle cable is a lot looser than it used to be.
I'll be taking it back to the garage tomorrow but as it's the sunniest day of the year today I really want to take it out without doing any damage to it.
any ideas would be much appreciated!!
Cheers
James

James, i wouldnt drive it if i were you...
Have a look for the problem , it could be something simple.
It could be that the mechanic left one of his spanners stuck down the side of the manifold, or it could be that there are some loose nuts inside the airfilter that the mechanic put there for safe keeping and they will get sucked into the engine...

worst case i know, but i would be too worried to use it and have to know what the noise was....

If for some reason the damper oil has drained out from the carb dashpots then they can rattle a bit at lowish, unsteady airflow rates.
Wouldn't call it a "loud" rattle though.

Considering the engin had to be pulled, It could be anything and sound travels easily

I cant imagine its anything serious...but if you do drive it, it could become serious very fast.

Definatly take it back...im sure the mech. Will find it fast and Correct it....probably even get to read the 1992 time life magazine while your waiting

Thanks for all the comments!
I took it out for a bit but got worried and brought it home.
I'll see what the mechanic says tomorrow.
Thanks again

And who says common scence is dead....my faith in mankind is (sorta ) restored

Good call James....let us know what happpens

That is my fear, something loose inside the carb throat wanting to explore and experiance an active piston /clyinder

So it turned out to be a bolt on the air cleaner that had lost it's thread and not the carbs at all.
A quick trip to moss europe and 90 pence was all it took. :)
