MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Number plate lights
Can you use an original 1500 number plate lamp on its own for an MOT. The combined light seems pretty feeble... I was thinking of someting like this. |

I don't see why not. You might fail with one bulb of a 2-light setup not working, but the setup you show seems reasonable. It was used on the earlier midgets, IIRC. (I'm not an MOT expert, however!) Why not ask your local MOT station? A |

Mine is original and has never been failed - but I go to an MOT centre where the tester worked on MGs when he was younger - he's tight and strict but he also knows the cars - find one like him - his knowledge is wonderful as well and I get loads of tips and comments on what I'm doing with her. |

Your light will pass, but the exposed wire will probably not pass, do you have a hole behind the light so the wire is not exposed? |
Rob Newt |
Robs agree. Light is fine - my landrover has one just like that and is fine. wire needs sorting :) on my midget i've used one of the holes that are in the bottom of the valance to route the wire through, mine lights up from underneath but you could route your wire up behind the plate? or drill a hole in the car. |

Another vote for yes! Ours has been like that for a few years, wire tucked un behind the plate so its not visible, but more importantly won't catch on anything. -Craig |

All Midgets up to when they split the rear bumper had a single light above the plate, just like you show in your photo. So it should be fine. |

not quite as photo they also had an angled plinth that stood the light unit off the body so the light stood out further than the numberplate and numberplate backing I don't think it would matter but don't know for sure You can only get the plinth s/h anyway |

If the regulations are a bit the same as in The Netherlands only 2 things are importand, it has to shine some light on the plate and it may not shine backwards as white light is only alowed at the front. But as stated by Nigel the lamp normally is mounted on an extension to shine a better light on the plate. And yes the loose cable will be a problem. |

Fitted, there are no number plate height restrictions in the UK MOT are there? |
BH Harvey |
And from the inside. I plan to cut the bolts down at some point, probably never will
|
BH Harvey |
Not that I'm aware. As long as the plate is more or less vertical so it can be read easily, I think it can be anywhere on front or back. |
