MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Nut And Bolt Sizes

Hello,

are there any charts or web sites that list the sizes of each individual nut and bolt on the midget,as i am going to replace as many as possible in Stainless.
(ie) Today i managed to get the size of the 2 that hold the coil bracket inplace which were 1/4" UNF x 0.75",but to get these dimensions i had to buy new originals from Moss,when they were presented in the bag the size was printed on it.But they could'nt tell me beforehand.
Hope all this is'nt double dutch.

Wayne. There is a tech article on how to measure bolts on my website, www.custompistols.com which may help you. You need a set of dial calipers and a thread pitch gauge, items which are available from suppliers to machinists and machine shops.

I have made up a list of the common MGB bolt sizes and posted it on my website. You might, as you go along, keep track of what sizes are used where on the Midget and do the same thing.

By the way, stainless steel is of two basic types--magnetic and non-magnetic. Both, however, will rust when in contact with rusty carbon steel, sometimes quite quickly.

The common fasteners on a spridget are 1/4" UNF, 5/16" UNF, and 3/8" UNF. A few others exist such as 7/16" UNF for seat belt fasteners and maybe a few parts in a 1/4 elliptic suspension, I'm not sure about the 1/2 elliptic, and some smaller unified fasteners in places like the windscreen surround.

An important point to bear in mind though is that common
SS fasteners will often be nowhere near as strong as many of the ones used on the car originally so replace with care. Replacing the likes of the coil fixings with SS is not likely an issue but important stressed components such as suspension and other structural fasteners should only be replaced like with like. The issue has come up a number of times on the board and the detailed issues with such replacements have been covered in a number of places. Basically replacing the standard fasteners with SS is hazardous and the use of appropriate standard fasteners is fine and they last for years if treated properly.

Cheers Dave,

apart from Copper slip ,how else should you treat them,as i am in the process of buying an uprated anti roll bar and polly bushes and was going to replace all the nuts and bolts as well.

The free Moss S&M catalogue lists bolts for each location by the factory code numbers.
In the back pages is a list of bolt numbers and their sizes as well as what all the numbers refer to i.e the factory numbers do indicate the diameter, thread and length.

Wayne, I'm I line with others on using original spec. for critical areas. Also, whilst UNF is the thread of choice for steel to steel, UNC is used in alloy areas such as carb, inlet manifold and starter to gearbox etc.
Study the Moss manual and you should be able to work out a full list, just don't buy them one at a time!
