MG Midget and Sprite Technical - off the shelf fuel cell available?

I was thinking of installing a fuel cell in the stock tank location (because lower center of gravity than if I put it in the trunk).

Does anyone make one for a midget (I have 73) that can be easily installed?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Rebecca,

If I understand your meaning, I mounted one in my Sprite like that. You mean you want it to below the floor level of the trunk floor instead of inside the trunk?

It's been so long since I did it that I can't actually remember how the original mounted. Anyway, I framed a hole in the trunk floor, built a sheet metal box that recessed into the hole, and put the fuel cell down in the box. Then I added straps over the top of it to hold it in place.

The frame that surrounds the hole in the trunk floor, which the lip of the metal box sits on, is wood and the wood held in with screws. That way if I were to need to change the ground clearance of the tank due to a tire or suspension change, I just need to cut a few boards of a different height and swap them out. I think I ended up with about 1 or 2 inches of the tank above the floor level and the rest of the tank below the floor level.

So, the fuel cell was off the shelf, but the mounting was custom. If I visit the car in the next few days I could take a picture.

Rebecca, none made directly for a midget that I know of. The 8 gallon one sold by Speedway is about the same size as the stock tank and comes with a protective steel case so would be great under the trunk floor. It may be a bit deep at 8 1/2" though. Still, you could easily cut the trunk floor as Charlie did and drop it as low as you dared. You're going to have to have some holes in the trunk floor anyway for the filler and supply lines. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Steel-Can-Fuel-Cells,447.html
If you want anti slosh foam that comes extra and is easy to install. The main problem with a racing cell is not having a provision for a fuel gauge sending unit though. If you plan on using the car on the street then I'd consider just keeping the stock tank. It sits low and is internally baffled so slosh is minimized.

I think I remember that a fuel level sending unit was available for the stuffed fuel cell. It was not a floating arm unit, but looked more like a probe. I don't know if it required a special gauge or not. I believe my cell is an ATL, and I think I saw the sending unit in their paperwork.

Also, though I would have to look to be sure, I suspect I might have framed my cut floor with metal and just used the wood for the selected height.

both Jegs and summit racing have alot of universial fit fuel cells in variing amounts of gallons and varying materials that they are made from, personaly after last weekend, Im really likeing the plastic tanks

both companys are great to work with and are good on pricing

Prop, if you checked out the link and read the small print you'd see that inside the steel case is a polyethelene tank. The steel outside is there for protection. I think I'd like the steel case under my car and right next to the exhaust system instead of just a plastic tank.

It appears that this is what Dan McCue did:

If you scroll down about half way you can see some pics.

I guess would have no choice but to cut the trunk floor to install a fuel cell. I guess I need to take this into consideration when designing the rollover bars attach points in the trunk. I had thought of adding a piece that connects the two trunk attach points but that might just get in the way of future fuel cell installations.

I think that for now I just won't do that.

Rebecca,

We've got a stock fuel tank with a bladder inside it on our racer. The top of the tank has been removed and replaced with a sheet of aluminum with holes put in the proper places. No reason that you couldn't use the top from your present tank if you can take it off gently and not damage it too much. I think that Fuelsafe made the cell for inside. Looks just like a stock tank from underneath. You would hve to send the whole tank to them to get it made I think. I'll post a picture when I get back over to the shop.

Tim,

That is a cool idea. I look forward to seeing your pictures.
