MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oh no, crank let go..! Asistance required pls.

We did the Austin Healey Club track day at Goodwood on Friday and the crank, on my 1330, let go with an almight bang and vibration at over 6000rpm. The break is through the web, between the no.3 big end and the main bearing. I have had contact of the no.3 piston and the head, as there's a witness mark on both, although no furtehr damage.

I will replace the crank, but will it be necessary to replace the rod and piston? Also does anyone have a 1275 crank or short block they're been dying to get cleared out of their garage? I based in Essex. I could also use a Marina short block if any one has.

The block appears is fine, I did not loose oil or water. I am trying to get fixed for Silverstone next month.

Thanks, James

James,

Not sure on the con rod but probably best to replace the piston. A mate that works for Ricardo showed one of their piston experts a piston out of his Caterham Xflow that had had a valve impact and he said it was best to replace it as that sort of damage often leads to later failure. Having said that I think I would replace the rod as well if you replace the piston just to be sure.

I got to agree with you dave, might even get thee other rods checked for straightness, and fatigue as well....im sure they didnt like being shifted about at 6000 rpm

I can sell you a 1400 short engine with Marina crank and a 286 camshaft. just needs a cylinder head.

James.

I too have spare cranks but I think Dave is closer to you.

You must NOT compromise on your engine rebuild. If a piston (or pistons) have come into contact with head or valves, change them and the valves in question, they will only come back and bite you later. All your rods should be checked too and use NEW rod bolts.

If you are going to Spridget 50 on Saturday, then perhaps Bob's offer of a short motor may be your quickest fix and will certainly be a quick motor.

Bob, if James doesn't buy your 1400, we'll talk about it sometime, I may have a use for it.

Mark.

Sorry James, cant offer any advice but if Mark doesnt beat me to it, I am also interested Bob ....

I also have a crank. Or a short 1330 motor. n.j.veuger (AT) ncl.ac.uk

Again, others a probably closer though.

Gents, many thanks for the oustanding responce.

I'll investigate the easiest option first.

Bob (robert) Midget Turbo, England - would you like to give me an email and let me know what kind of a price we would be talking about and where you're based, or if you're going to Midget 50? Please call if easier on home 01277 215656, or mobile 0795 2221350.

Thanks to all again! James
