MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oil filter Head advice please?
Hi Guys,
1285 midget Mk 3 , 1972. Doing a replacement Oil filter today, the filter stuck and I had to butcher the filter off by removing the filter head. My car has a oil cooler and the cooler hose leads from the filter housing. I've had a good look at the Moss diagrams etc& I THINK the head part number is TAM2097. Does that seem right? I also could not see a gasket of any kind once I had removed the filter hosing from the block- again , I plan to put one there with a a GUG705553GM does this seem right? Thanks for any help Cheers colin |

Colin Think it might be that Part Number, if so Minispares sell them: http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/TAM2097.aspx The above link also shows gasket options and studs too. Thanks Mike |

Colin, I'm sure you already know this but ,just in case, it's important to oil/grease the O ring on spin on filters when you fit them to stop the O ring glueing itself to the housing and don't overtighten it-- cheers willy |

I have always experienced difficulty with the nuts on the oil filter head. The design impedes the spanner head. I have replaced the studs and nuts with machine bolts and use an Allen key to turn. The Allen key will need shortening to allow access to the bolt head. Instead of grease on the oil filter rubber I use a smidgen of washing up liquid. The mention of washing up liquid usually attracts the doom-sayers. |

Colin, yes the original is TAM2097. This is attached to the block by a couple of very long setscrews, the filter head is a substantial thick ally casting. Beware that replacements are often an inferior redesign with a far thinner mounting flange attached by two short setscrews. See part 155 here:
https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/mg/midget/engine/oil-system/external-engine-sprite-iv-midget-iii-1500-1958-66.html The main pic shows the original part but if you click on the '155' you get the pic of the not-so-good type. The problem is that the thin flange is prone to cracking under prolonged vibration. This also the one in the minispares link. However Minispares also do a competition version machined from billet and presumably a better grade material too, part number 12A2032RACE but it's 5 times the price. Caveat emptor. |
