MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oil Filter head query.
Hi all,
midget MK 3 1972 following Recent oil change etc, to get the spin on filter off, I had to remove the Oil filter head, ( easier than swearing at odd and unusual angles in the engine bay) and it LOOKS as if the filter/ head has cross threaded, which is why it was difficult to remove. It SEEMS tight when I put a new filter on...but I have a nagging worry that the cross threading might let the filter come adrift. I planned to get a new filter head, which used the 88G402 gasket, but it looks like these are NLA. I can find some form Moss etc , Minispares, but am not sure which one to go for. Can anyone suggest which filter head to go for as a replacement for my early version filter head. My car runs a oil cooler too,. cheers colin |

Do you need a new filter head? Surely if the bolt has cross threaded, the damaged threading is in the block? If its gasket you are after I have a spare although the hole in it is sort of pear shaped rather than oblong as on the Moss site one. |

Colin, this is the gasket that I have but maybe it's just for the earlier style of oil filter connector that angles the filter head back? You are welcome to this, or maybe just make one? They are just brown paper

Hi Guy, Thanks for your kind offer, Very kind offer, but I believe the the thread FROM the oil filter housing INTO the oil filter is where the thread looks a bit shagged. The bolts from the housing to the block are fine. HTH helps cheers colin |

If the thread isn't too bad, you can always take a small file and clean them up. Run the filter on and off the thread as you go along until you're happy with it. I've done that over the years with good success. |

You can readily buy a replacement stud if you do not wish to run a UNF die down the thread at the filter housing end (the block end is UNC) see: http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Fuel/Carburetors/Fittings/CHS2613.aspx?130207&ReturnUrl=/product/Classic/TAM2097.aspxBack%20to Gasket: http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Engine/Block/Gaskets/12A2035.aspx?100108&ReturnUrl=/product/Classic/TAM2097.aspxBack%20to Alternative gasket: http://www.minispares.com/product/classic/GUG705553GM.aspx Filter housing: http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/TAM2097.aspx Thanks Mike |
