MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oil Help if possible?

Hi all,
I've seen quite a lot of different information about this, so thought I would post this here as all advice I have had from here so far has been spot on!
What Oil SHOULD I use for my 1275 midget mk III which is NOT my daily drive- its goes out on country roads whwn its dry (!)
Should the gearbox oil be the same as the engine oil?
Is any brand " better" than the rest- sorry to post , but I really dont know.
Cheers all

some oils are better than others but you need to match oil to vehicle and use

most owners will be (I'm guessing of course) a classic mineral 20w-50 oil like Castrol XL or Halfords

not using the car regularly will do it no favours regardless of weather

thorough oil and filter changes are necessary on a car even if it's not used much, possibly more so depending on use

if you have the standard gearbox then it uses the same oil as the engine

if you don't know how old the gearbox oil is then as it's so cheap and easy to do I'll recommend changing it with fresh new oil

to drain best get the oil as hot as you can and leave to drain for as long as you can, comparing the old oil to new might give you an indication of previous attention to the car
