MG Midget and Sprite Technical - oil pressure/temp gauge
Hi wonder if anyone can help, I have a 1973 RWA midget and the temp gauge isn't working the core inside the coiled wire is snapped near the sensor, can this be fixed ,can the pipe be replaced or does the whole unit need replacing. Also the fuse on the windscreen wipers keeps blowing it can't be the wiring 'cause Ive just fitted a brand new harness, any ideas would be good. Thanks. |

The temp gauge can be repaired, but generally its easier and cheeper to fit new! the wiper fuse may be down to drag causing strain on the motor -- you would need to strip down the system, clean out the pipes and re grease. ( as a test first,if you take the plate off of the wiper gearbox, and remove the arm from the cam gear this would allow the motor to opperate without pushing all the wiper gear hence removing the strain on the motor) |

Paul reference the wiper motor, did it blow fuses before you fitted the new harness? Has it ever worked correctly? |

Re the temp guage, if it is the dual gauge with the "solid" connection to a large brass sensor, it cannot be repaired without specialist equipment. IIRC it's actually a tube full of gas which expands and contracts, operating a diaphram within the gauge to move the needle. Graham. |

Thanks for the suggestions folks, to answer bob, the wipers didn't work before the new harness, they must have worked at one stage cause the car passed an mot but it's been off the road for 10 years so I can't remember. |

Paul perhaps the wipers are faulty but equally you may have the switch or indeed the motor wire incorrectly and thus cause the problems. The design of the wiper circuit is for god knows what reason very strange. Has the wiper connection got a small plug and socket connection? Is the switch individually wired or does it have a socket connection? |

the connection to the motor is a block type, the connections to the switch are individual, I think they are correct.I'm not sure about overloading due to drag because the fuse blows instantly when the connection is made, I would imagine ( correct me if i'm wrong ) that if it was drag the motor would try and turn a few times. Any thoughts welcome. |

Paul what colour wires are on the back of the switch/ does the car have a dynamo? |

I got the same wiper motor problem...havent given alot of atten. but I never thought of motor drag, ill have to look into that down the road. prop |
