MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oil Pump does not fit!

Anyone had an issue with fitting a new oil pump to a 1098 Sprite engine? I recently bought a new pump but it has two extra bumps on the top periphery that foul the cap and the end plate. When I questioned the reputable supplier I purchased it from they said it is the only pump they can now get and to modifiy the end plate and remove the cap. I understand some later cars and Mini's do not have the cap in the end plate. Is this ok for the Sprite, the pump is covered by the gearbox housing but there is still an open hole into the block. Will I get leakage into the clutch housing?

I have tried running without a cover and it wasn't very successful.

You could try to locate a 1275 backplate and cover, as it is a larger diameter.

Thanks Dave. Will all the gearbox mountings be identical on the 1275 plate?

Yes
Both engines use basicley the same ribcase gearbox

This is because the pump is a 4 lobe rather than 3 lobe pump. The 3 lobe pumps are still available but are a lower capacity pump.

It doesn't foul by much. The simplest way to sort it is to file the surplus off - it can be done without damaging the operational aspects of the pump. This has been done to a number of engines here with no ill effects.

If you do use the 1275 backplate (very rare) then if you have the samll main (10CG) verion of the 1098 you should check there are no issues around the crank scroll housing. Probably not, but just in case.

Have you tried magic? I thought you potters were good at that sort of thing. :)

Sorry couldn't resist, esp as you are Arry Potter.

Paul, thanks for the comment sounds like the pump I have is a better technical solution.

Lawrence unfortunately I am all out of eye of Newt or whatever, although my wife has got a broomstick (don't tell her I said that). Cheers.
