MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Paint codes (new ones)
Anyone either converted the old bmc paint codes to RAL or know of a way to do it? |

I doubt whether you could get a good match with the standard Ral Chart, you may if you could get your hands on a Ral Colour Design Chart which has many more colours to choose from but I have not seen one of those for years and I work for a German paint company. |

Thanks Tim, I understand colour is very complex but was hoping there was something easy I missed. btw how is the car? |

I have a RAL design paint chart somewhere, got it from the paint supplies company in the industrial area about 200m from my apartment. I am in Cambodia right now, I will have a look when I get home at the weekend |

Dave, the car is still off the road, 2 cylinder heads being made into 1 good one by Peter Burgess so hopefully in a couple of weeks the head will be back on to stay, fingers crossed. If you do need your paint code matching to the closest Ral I will gladly help, just let me know. |

Good news Tim. The PB head will be good. I haven't met a disgruntled owner yet. Thanks for the offer. As always it takes a little time for my brain to come up with a way of cross checking things and in this case since asking about RAL I got some touch up to see if it was close on the car and its no where near. The car is much darker and redder than orangey. I then used some paint rubbing compound on the car to find the colour was the same through and through and not sun affected. (fits with the PO saying it was in the dark garage for about 10 years so no sunlight). So its not the right vermillion anyway. I know the car has been sprayed at least twice all over since new (once purple) and no doubt more than that judging from the replacement panels on at least 3 corners and across the front. So its probably some unknown near colour that someone had to hand the last time it was done. (or should I say pranged). Anyway the upshot is that I am deciding what to do. I do a good job of hand painting and there is a polyurethane one pack in 'vermillion' that would be close (RAL 2002). However this is my day car and as it will never be pristine I am now trying to decide if I should have it in a colour scheme I would like rather than plain vermillion. Anyway good luck with the recessed bolts. I couldn't see a way to put them back so left the manifold on the head when I did it. I would probably end up making a tool for it. |

Hi I know this isn't the answer for RAL, but I guess you have come across cross referencing paint manufacturer codes for BMC/BLMC/BL paint codes? http://www.teglerizer.com/mgcolors/index.html and the BLMC/BL paint codes http://www.mgexp.com/article/bmc-paint.html and info on midget & Sprite website opn paint codes and trim combinations: http://midgetandspriteclub.com/Documents/Tech/colourSchemes.pdf As for RAL, someone must have done it (RAL is after BMC?), if they could not use one of the existing paint manufacturer's codes. Cheers Mike |
