MG Midget and Sprite Technical - panhard rod fitted!

I just fitted the perfect fitting Peter May panhard rod on my quarter elliptic frogeye. I am more content with it than I expected:
The car is much more stable in (bumpy) corners. There is less over steer, so I have to turn the steering wheel more than before or (can) give more and earlier throttle in corners. In line stability on bumpy roads is better. Changing direction quickly is both smoother and predictable. I don’t feel differences between left and right hand corners, witch theoretically exists. The care behaves more like a modern car. What I don’t understand is that the self steering under accelerating and braking using the engine or the hand brake as a brake is less than before. (The roll steer of the back axle does not change with a panhard rod). Can anybody explain this?

Flip. Cart springs don't provide a geometry. Panhard has proper links. Normally lower roll centre and give fixed points, unlike cart springs which are flexibly mounted and distort under cornering, braking and acceleration.

Packard Merlin?

Hi Gryf

That's the danger of posting from an Android smart-phone... the sp corrector / text prediction is great, but often completely changes the meaning if you're not paying attention. Packard - Panhard.

Made mine in around 2 hours including painting and fitting, from MGB rack and some square tube lying around.

I was waiting with me mate Paul for the bonnet to dry (just painted) and needed something to do rather than keeping dabbing the bonnet with my fingers to check.

The Pachard Merlin is a beaut... but can't help thinking around 1650bhp would be a tad over the top in a midget... better to find two, some old bits of ply and make a Mosquito.
