MG Midget and Sprite Technical - PCV service
I think I have a PCV. Do all 1275 midgets have one. Its attached to the front of the engine with a pipe from the top which splits via a y piece and then enters the carbs. The canister is slightly smaller than a coke can. From reading the archives this system uses the manifold suction to remove crank case pressure and the canister is used to catch the oil vapour. Do I need to service it, can I take it off give it a clean and put it back on. I cant make out any fixings to have a go at, though these many be cover by the nasty gold paint. Thanks in advance

You do not have a PCV the item you are describing is as you say a simple oil catcher on the front timing cover. To do any kind of service to it you would need to remove the front timing cover and try to wash it out with parafin or whatever. Not an easy job and normally not necessary except when rebuilding the engine

Ah yes well No That is just the normal oil separator canister on the timing chain cover from that up to the "Y" piece thence into each inlet section of the carburettor to provide free "suck" to maintain low internal pressure inside the crankcase, as you suggest The PCV thingy is a sort of dish-with-diaphragm doohdah that sits near the rocker cover (I THINK) that causes/creates/utilises/whatever suction to do pollution control stuff. (I THINK) Not having one I cant help beyond the initial bit Your car is Normal as far as I can tell Servicing is only possible if you remove the cover and soak the whole lot in cellulose thinners or equally agressive controlled substances to dislodge caked on oil fume solids for several days I have read about this being necessary, but, I have my doubts. Generally, if you can suck a clean pipe and feel a flow through the canister you have enough flow to do the job. Please dont keep sucking 'cos I'm sure that stuff in there will be very bad for your health
