MG Midget and Sprite Technical - peco manifold: what am I missing ?

fitted a peco manifold from Moss yesterday which took ages and ages as it needed persuading into place. finished up quite late so left the carbs till tonight.

just offered them up and theres no way on earth they are ever going to fit.

the center branch is simply in the way.

the catalogue makes no mention of needing different carb manifolds, so is it simply sh*t design or badly made, or both ?

yours incredibly annoyed, phil.

Looks like it's designed for a Weber inlet manifold.

yet another good ol' Peco

there is no word genteel enough for me to use on a public forum to describe how much I detest them

the centre branch on mine is aligned about 3/8" off its centre line so it has to be forced to fit every time I take the power unit out, with cosequential damage to the centre studs.

good ol' Pecoc..p

you get what you pay for..... :(
peco is crap sorry to say.
this one should work with a weber or maybe a good su manifold.
But do not expect a big power increase from it.
just look at how the 3 primary's join in to the exhaust... juk

if butget allows go for a maniflow!

Onno Könemann

when i fitted my 2nd set of Peco manifold on my 1500 it came out 8cm!!!! lower under the passenger(LHD)floor then the old one was!!!
The old one was nice/acceptable close to the floor but this one would have scraped over the floor at any road...

No more Peco for me, went for custommade Stainless Steel then and now on the Kseries again.
Might cost more at buying but i am convinces it saves you on the long run and you dont have this fitting-cr*p anymore so its even better for your hart too! ;)

Maniflow everytime I'm afraid...

Peco stuff is badly designed and made junk...

Send it back packed with explosives.

Phil,

Did you get it from Moss Bristol ?

Owen who runs the Bristol branch I've found to be very helpful.
Take it back -with the pics - its either not for a midget ! or VERY badly made. I had one on my donor car and it did fit with standard twins as you have.

I'm sure he will sort it out.

The Maniflow is the way to go - still a little difficult to fit with the engine in place, but fits very well.
If you need to see one fitted let me know I'm at Clevedon.

gah!

ok, all I want is a header where the exhaust stays on. the stick system is frustrating to say the least - i nearly took a lump hammer to the lot earlier - I cannot see how the microscopic lip can be held in place by the clamp.

so I would like a manifold that uses bolt on flanges or one where the tube slips inside another tube, is a maniflow the way forward ?

are there uk suppliers ?

i've had a good year working on the car so far, now I'm just annoyed at it.

richard, yeah got it from moss - so my stock carb manifold -should- fit ? I'm dubious ...

alas, I can't take it back as I've cut one inch off the end to join two other pipes that make up the center branch. bollocks.

Phil,

Well I would still take it back - sales of goods - fit for purpose etc.

Worth a try - even if you have to negotiate a bit - the one you have just is wrong !

Not sure what you mean about joining up - the outlet should fit over the rear pipe when cut to length.

The other manifolds Moss sell I understand are Maniflows - best to check.

Maniflow is a U.K company and made my unit (slightly bespoke rearbox arrangement to order.)

I used a bit off the peco manifold to join the stock center piece back together after I trimmed it to fit - I need some kind of exhaust, even if it is one that will pop off the manifold at the slightest provocation.
wish i'd trial fitted the carbs first now ... :D

ahh well.

Phil, for lots of advice, and supply of Maniflow stuff at sensible prices (i.e. less than Moss) talk to Kim at Magic Midget
http://www.magicmidget.co.uk/

the bonus is he's near you, down Melksham way
David Smith

cheers, assuming their LCB is compatable with the stock carb manifold, I'll probably be getting one then :)

Phil -

I fitted a maniflow LCB a few months ago with completely stock carbs. Fits a treat, far better than the rusted-through one I took off (which I think may have been an old Peco). The chassis had been relieved to fit the old manifold, but wouldn't need to be for the maniflow. Sits up nice and tight to the floor, closer than my old one, too. And sounds much nicer than my old one too! Bonus.

I can totally recommend Magic Midget; rushed it over to me to get the car back on the road, and chucked in a section of straight pipe I needed as the middle pipe had rusted through too, for nothing. Can't recommend them highly enough!

Magic Midget did me a very good deal on wheels too.

Magic Midget every time.

Phil, I have a long LCB from Moss although it's not a Peco (bought some time ago). I had an issue fitting it but it was fouling the carb heat shield not the intake manifold or carb bodies. Solution was to cut a 'H' shaped slot in the heat shield and bend the two inner tabs of the 'H' away from the centre branch pipe.

Your centre branch does appear to stick out slightly more than mine, so it's diffecult to judge from the photo whether my solution would work, but it gives you another option to at least measure up.

You have a lot of sympathy here, so if you want to take it back to Moss I'll stand beside you.

Mine's Maniflow as I got fed up with cracking the stupid socket joint too. I have a spare one in the shed that MIGHT be worth having, I'll check in the morning. Otherwise, save up or whatever, but go to Kim Dear at Magic Midget or direct for a Maniflow. I can pick it up and run it in to Bristol to you.

Hi Phil
The spare one I have turns out to be Moggy Minor, sorry.

I'm still very happy to help out any way I can. PM is andy dot cross743 at freeserve dot co dot uk with the spaces removed and real ats and dots.

I bought a Maniflow unit in the end - it fits a treat :)

andy - just tried to mail you to say thanks for the offer, but it bounced back, so 'thanks for the offer' :)
