MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Pedal Box Options
Hi Just starting to look at options for the pedal box for the cosworth project and wanted some thoughts of others please. I do have a tilton triple master cylinder set up that i could use but it needs the panel modifying to fit so that is option 1. Option 2 use normal pedal box as is Option 3 use 1500 pedal box with what i believe is the better brake light switch and also is it worth using the 1500 brake cylinder and having the 2 lines coming from it ? The brake set up so far is discs on rears on anglia axle and JLH brake kit for the front thanks Andy |

With non-standard brakes, it might be better to fit the triple cylinder set-up, as it will be easier to adjust for front to rear bias. You could always fit a separate bias valve, though. I'm not sure that the mechanical brake light switch is any better, certainly where replacement parts are concerned. |

With your set up... tilton without question its so superior in everyway to the old lucas with the tilton yku can buy differant size cly and the system is completely adjustable from brake peddle postion to brake peddle travel and with vwrious size cly you can fit to any size capiper and barke pad size plus with tilton you can call there engenerring department they will ask you alot of qustions and a day later you get an email telling you all the size spec you will need for there cly... no guess work means its right the first time the tilton system is a hard kit to install... i measured 2 hours a day for 2 weeks before i made my 1st cut into the car....you want to think this one thur carfully ... it was a long project and expensive but i couldnt be more proud of this project side tip... 1. use AN fittings and all stianless steel braided brake hose ... esp for hooking up to the master cly 2. The peddles are going to be tight in the footwell space so grind off the inside edge 1/4 inch off both the clutch and brake and that helps alot 3. Coat the peddles with a rubberized coating ... they get slick when wet... this wws going to be my project this coming week 4. Get a 1500 gas peddle... its a much better funtioning peddle with the tilton peddles over the organ peddle in fast spiirited driving give me a moment and ill post some photos prop |

Peddle box cover i made this from a bread pan and used a door seal to trim it... because of the hole that has to be cut the heat rolls thur the hole and just cooks inside the car... the cover prevents this |

And last... rain channel cut out i had to notch out the rain channel then reinfore with angle alumium (not seen) for the cap to clear The photo is proof why you want to spend alot of time measuring and thinking this throgh something not seen is the reinforcing of the footwell and the sub frwme i made for the peddle assembly to sit onto to make it level ... i made out of angle iron in a wedge shape its not a difficult job... you just have to be constantly thinking but it is completely worth the investment Btw.. ive got a 1st generation rx7 rear axle assembly with lsd and disk brakes and ladder bars to add to the panhard rod and tele adgustable gas shocks ... if i ever get rich agian that will become my new rear end |

Prop thanks really good info, Can i just check so i presume you have made the hole that the pedals go through larger and then secured the box through the mounting panel as per the old one but with bolts in different positions ? Thanks Andy |

Yes i had to cut the hole bigger then where the factory cover attached then i made a angle iron frame that mounted on the under side and a frame on top to level the tilton box then bolted the tilton assb thur te top leveling frame the cars sheet metal the lower angle iron frame that made a good strong ridgid bond By just cutting the hole bigg3r and bolting the tilton on without the other there is to much flex btw... rigid brake pipe is impossiable to attach to the back of the cly as you can see in the photo... the base is on an angle and the tilton needs to sit flat so there is a funny tight angle at the back where ridgid pipe has to get pigion holed into.. thus AN fittings on braided line... i only got rigid line across the firewall everything else is braided... i had intended to replace that also but ... time and money are my constant detractors |

Well... 10 years is along time so the mind does remember stuff differantly maybe i made the top part an angle iron frame... but here is the lower section i do remember the sheet metal has to be reinforced or there is to much flex |

Thought I'd contribute to this thread with a picture of my finished 3 master cylinder pedal box all fitted into a standard pedal box. Bit of general messing about but it fits. This will be going into my Lenham LeMans shortly. |

Nice job Martyn. I'm insanely jealous. I've always fancied a Lenham LeMans. Any pics of the car? |

No pictures of the car yet it's at CCK having the bank end grafted on, almost seemed to be butchery to cut up a brand new shell but no rust anywhere and I paid less for the new shell than it would have cost to repair a rusty one. When I have the car back I will start to take some build pictures etc - at present I am building up all the sub assemblies. |
